Description
Doug Watkins slips a sly pickup under the St. Thomas head, and Sonny Rollins rides it like second nature. From there the calypso pops, with Max Roach’s crisp rimshots and Tommy Flanagan’s clipped chords locking the groove. Saxophone Colossus is the hard bop classic most folks know, but the guts lie in Blue 7, eleven minutes of thematic improvising where little ideas bloom and fold back as the quartet keeps the simmer. Moritat gives Mack the Knife a streetwise lilt without losing the bite.
Cut at Rudy Van Gelder’s Hackensack studio in 1956 with Flanagan, Watkins, and Roach, this LP pressing opens up the room. The space around the horn feels truer and the low end sits deeper.

File it beside Coltrane’s Blue Train in your 50s hard bop corner and it holds its own. New listeners will latch onto St. Thomas right away. Longtime heads come back for the patient storytelling on Blue 7. It works at a small gathering or during a quiet Saturday tidy, and you’ll keep noticing how conversational Rollins sounds from chorus to chorus.
