Description
When Theon Cross’s tuba ducks under Kojey Radical’s hook on Hustle, the whole room tilts. Black To The Future finds Sons Of Kemet drilling their double-drum attack into tight, purpose-built songs, led by Shabaka Hutchings’ tenor. On Field Negus, Joshua Idehen’s spoken invocation frames the record’s intent before the band surges. Pick Up Your Burning Cross throws Moor Mother and Angel Bat Dawid into a whirlwind of snare chatter and tuba churn; it’s thrilling and pointed.
The 2LP pressing opens up the space, and the low end sits deeper, so tuba and toms hit with proper body without smearing the horns.
File it next to Art Ensemble of Chicago in the politically charged corner of the jazz shelf, but this one moves like contemporary London club music too. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Sons Of Kemet records online with us. It works for small gatherings or focused late drives, and the suite-like flow rewards full sides. Guests feel integrated, not decorative, which keeps the urgency human. You’ll still catch new accents and breaths on the third or fourth pass.
Shop online or dig for it in our Preston store while stock lasts.
