Description
A small intake of air before Ben leans into the first phrase of Soulville says everything. Recorded in 1957 with Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Herb Ellis and Stan Levey, this is Webster in late-night, unhurried form. Title track 'Soulville' unfurls like a slow walk home, his vibrato rich but never syrupy. Late Date talks in half-smiles, his sly bends saying more than words. Makin’ Whoopee turns into a warm back-and-forth with Peterson, all relaxed swing. This LP pressing opens up space and the low end sits deeper, so Ray’s bass feels properly rooted. It belongs next to Coleman Hawkins’ late-50s small-group sides, same era, different kind of sigh. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Ben Webster records online with us. File it under quiet evenings and patient solos; it also works for a Sunday tidy. From the hushed ballads to the lightly salted blues, the interplay stays conversational and unfussy. The Ben Webster Quintet - Soulville (LP) never shouts, it simply keeps you close.
Available to order online or in our Melbourne record store, your crate needs this one.
