Description
Cut at Rudy Van Gelder’s Englewood Cliffs studio in 1965 with Bob Thiele producing, The John Coltrane Quartet Plays captures the classic group pushing familiar forms into the mystic. Chim Chim Cheree arrives on soprano, Coltrane circling the melody while Elvin Jones keeps a tidal cymbal swell and Jimmy Garrison’s drone anchors the chant. Nature Boy stretches into a modal study where McCoy Tyner’s left hand carves granite steps. Brazilia is the burner, toms rumbling into a vamp that keeps reshaping under Coltrane’s cries.
This LP pressing gives the music breathing room; space around piano and horns is easier to feel, and the low end sits deeper without muddiness. You can buy John Coltrane records online with us if you prefer. It belongs next to mid-60s Impulse spiritual jazz, right alongside early Pharoah Sanders on your shelf.
Packaging is faithful and handsome, with Impulse! design cues that still look sharp. I reach for this when someone asks where the “classic quartet” gets stormy but still sings; it’s a compelling bridge between Crescent and the freer paths to come. Add it to your collection today, available online or in our Melbourne record store.
