Description
Craig David's sophomore album, "Slicker Than Your Average," released on November 19, 2002, is a fascinating exploration of the artist's growth and versatility. Following the massive success of his debut album, "Born to Do It," Craig David faced the challenge of living up to high expectations. With "Slicker Than Your Average," he managed to carve out a distinct identity, showcasing his ability to blend R&B, pop, and UK garage influences seamlessly.
The album kicks off with the title track, "Slicker Than Your Average," which sets the tone with its confident lyrics and infectious beat. Craig David's smooth vocals glide over the production, which is both polished and edgy, reflecting the album's title perfectly. This track, along with others, highlights David's knack for catchy hooks and relatable storytelling.
One of the standout tracks is "Rise & Fall," featuring the legendary Sting. This collaboration is a testament to Craig David's ability to bridge different musical worlds. The song samples Sting's "Shape of My Heart," and the combination of David's soulful voice with Sting's iconic sound creates a hauntingly beautiful track that explores the ups and downs of fame. "Rise & Fall" received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, charting in the top ten in several countries.
Another notable track is "What's Your Flava?" which was released as the lead single. It's a playful, upbeat song that showcases David's charisma and ability to craft a pop hit. The song's catchy chorus and funky production made it a favorite on radio stations and music video channels alike.
"Slicker Than Your Average" was well-received by critics, who praised Craig David for his vocal performance and the album's production quality. However, some noted that it didn't quite capture the groundbreaking impact of his debut. Despite this, the album solidified David's status as a prominent figure in the music industry during the early 2000s.
The album also delves into more introspective themes with tracks like "World Filled with Love" and "You Don't Miss Your Water ('Til the Well Runs Dry)." These songs reveal a more vulnerable side of David, as he reflects on love, loss, and personal growth. His ability to convey emotion through his music is one of his greatest strengths, and these tracks are a testament to that.
In terms of production, "Slicker Than Your Average" features contributions from a variety of producers, including Mark Hill, who worked with David on his debut album. The production is slick and contemporary, incorporating elements of R&B, hip-hop, and garage, which were popular at the time. This blend of styles helped the album appeal to a broad audience, both in the UK and internationally.
While "Slicker Than Your Average" may not have achieved the same level of iconic status as "Born to Do It," it remains an important part of Craig David's discography. It showcases his evolution as an artist and his willingness to experiment with different sounds and themes. The album's success helped cement his reputation as a versatile and talented musician capable of crossing genre boundaries.
Overall, "Slicker Than Your Average" is a solid follow-up to Craig David's debut, offering a mix of catchy hits and introspective ballads. It's an album that captures the essence of early 2000s R&B and pop, while also highlighting David's unique voice and artistic vision. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his music, this album is definitely worth a listen.
