Description
Engelbert Humperdinck's album Twelve Great Songs Plus 'Release Me' is a classic example of the crooner's ability to captivate audiences with his smooth voice and heartfelt delivery. Released in 1967, this album came at a pivotal moment in Humperdinck's career, as it followed the massive success of his breakout single "Release Me", which is also featured on this record. The album showcases his talent for interpreting a variety of songs, blending pop and traditional balladry in a way that feels timeless.
The inclusion of "Release Me" is, of course, a highlight. This song not only became a signature piece for Humperdinck but also played a significant role in his rise to international fame. Its success was remarkable, topping the UK Singles Chart and famously preventing The Beatles' "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields Forever" from reaching number one. The song's lush orchestration and Humperdinck's emotive performance make it a standout track that still resonates with listeners today.
The rest of the album is a collection of well-chosen songs that complement Humperdinck's vocal style. Tracks like "There Goes My Everything" and "Am I That Easy to Forget" showcase his ability to convey deep emotion, while songs like "The Last Waltz" (which would later become another hit for him) highlight his knack for delivering memorable melodies. The arrangements are rich and polished, typical of the era's production values, and they provide a perfect backdrop for Humperdinck's voice to shine.
What makes this album particularly enjoyable is its consistency. Each track feels carefully selected and arranged to create a cohesive listening experience. Humperdinck's voice is the star of the show, and he brings a sincerity to his performances that makes even the most familiar songs feel fresh. The album's production, handled by Peter Sullivan, ensures that the orchestral arrangements and Humperdinck's vocals are perfectly balanced, creating a warm and inviting sound.
Twelve Great Songs Plus 'Release Me' is not just a showcase of Engelbert Humperdinck's vocal talent but also a testament to his ability to connect with his audience. The album captures a moment in time when traditional pop music was still a dominant force, and it serves as a reminder of why Humperdinck became one of the genre's most beloved figures. For fans of classic pop and easy listening, this album is a must-listen, offering a glimpse into the artistry of one of the era's most iconic performers.
