Description

Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine 2xLP Vinyl Record

Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine" is a musical masterpiece that showcases the artist's exceptional talent and artistic evolution. Released in 2005, the album weaves intricate melodies and poignant lyrics, highlighting Apple's distinctive vocal style and thought-provoking songwriting.

Initially shelved by the record label, the album eventually surfaced in response to fan demand, solidifying its cult status. "Extraordinary Machine" is a captivating exploration of love, self-discovery, and resilience, making it a pivotal chapter in Fiona Apple's acclaimed discography.

Fiona Apple's "Extraordinary Machine" is an album that has a fascinating backstory almost as compelling as the music itself. Released on October 4, 2005, this album marked Apple's third studio effort and came after a long hiatus following her 1999 release, "When the Pawn...". The journey to its release was fraught with delays, leaks, and a change in production direction, all of which contributed to the album's mystique and anticipation.

Initially, "Extraordinary Machine" was produced by Jon Brion, a frequent collaborator known for his lush, orchestral arrangements. However, after the album was shelved by Sony Music, reportedly due to concerns about its commercial viability, fans began a campaign to "Free Fiona" and get the album released. During this time, tracks from the Brion sessions were leaked online, generating significant buzz and demonstrating the strong fan support for Apple's work.

Eventually, Fiona Apple returned to the studio with producers Mike Elizondo and Brian Kehew to rework the album. The final version of "Extraordinary Machine" that was released in 2005 features a mix of the original Brion-produced tracks and new recordings. This blend of production styles gives the album a unique sound that balances Apple's signature introspective lyrics with both lush and stripped-down musical arrangements.

Critically, "Extraordinary Machine" was met with widespread acclaim. It was praised for its lyrical depth, Apple's vocal performance, and the inventive production. The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album, further cementing its place in the music landscape of the mid-2000s. Publications like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork lauded the album, with Pitchfork giving it a high score and highlighting its emotional complexity and Apple's growth as an artist.

Standout tracks on the album include the title track "Extraordinary Machine," which opens the album with a whimsical, almost theatrical feel, and "O' Sailor," a poignant reflection on loss and longing. "Not About Love" showcases Apple's ability to blend raw emotion with biting wit, while "Tymps (The Sick in the Head Song)" features a jazzy, off-kilter rhythm that underscores her unique approach to songwriting.

One of the most interesting aspects of "Extraordinary Machine" is how it reflects Fiona Apple's resilience and artistic integrity. Despite the challenges and delays, Apple remained true to her vision, ultimately delivering an album that resonates with authenticity and emotional honesty. Her ability to navigate the complexities of the music industry while maintaining her artistic voice is a testament to her strength as a musician and a person.

In terms of cultural significance, "Extraordinary Machine" stands as a testament to the power of fan support and the changing dynamics of music distribution in the digital age. The "Free Fiona" campaign was one of the early examples of how online communities could influence the music industry, a trend that has only grown in the years since.

Overall, "Extraordinary Machine" is a remarkable album that showcases Fiona Apple's unique talents and her ability to craft songs that are both deeply personal and universally relatable. It's an album that rewards repeated listens, revealing new layers and insights with each play. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to her music, "Extraordinary Machine" is an essential listen that captures the essence of Fiona Apple's artistry.
