Description
George Michael - Older 2xLP Vinyl Record
Released in 1996, Older is the third studio album by the English singer-songwriter, George Michael.
The album marked a departure from the synthesised production of his previous projects, delivering a more organic sound with the inclusion of brass and strings. Michael was particularly inspired by the music of Brazilian composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, who died in 1994, and to whom the album was dedicated.
Older found Michael experimenting with new musical styles and expanding his artistic horizons. Particularly notable was the jazz flavour of the album's sound.
A gorgeous album and well deserving of a spot in your collection!
George Michael's "Older," released on May 13, 1996, is a deeply personal and introspective album that marked a significant moment in the artist's career. This album came after a period of personal turmoil and professional challenges for Michael, including the loss of his partner, Anselmo Feleppa, and a legal battle with his record label, Sony Music. These experiences profoundly influenced the themes and tone of "Older," making it one of his most mature and reflective works.
The album was both a commercial success and a critical darling. It debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and produced six top-three singles in the UK, including "Jesus to a Child" and "Fastlove," both of which reached number one. "Older" was certified multi-platinum in the UK and received widespread acclaim for its sophisticated production and emotional depth.
"Jesus to a Child," the album's lead single, is a hauntingly beautiful tribute to Feleppa. The song's melancholic melody and heartfelt lyrics resonate with a sense of loss and longing, showcasing Michael's ability to convey deep emotion through his music. "Fastlove," on the other hand, is a more upbeat track with a catchy groove, reflecting a desire for carefree enjoyment and the pursuit of pleasure.
Critics praised "Older" for its mature sound and lyrical content. The album marked a departure from the pop-oriented style of Michael's earlier work, embracing a more jazz-influenced and soulful sound. This shift was well-received, with many reviewers noting the album's sophisticated arrangements and Michael's vocal performance. The Guardian described "Older" as "a masterclass in adult pop," while Rolling Stone highlighted its "lush, soulful sound."
One of the standout tracks, "Spinning the Wheel," addresses themes of infidelity and trust, wrapped in a smooth, jazzy arrangement. The song's introspective lyrics and Michael's emotive delivery make it a highlight of the album. "You Have Been Loved" is another poignant track, reflecting on love and loss with a gentle, acoustic arrangement that underscores the sincerity of Michael's performance.
The production of "Older" was handled by George Michael himself, showcasing his talents not only as a singer and songwriter but also as a producer. The album's sound is characterized by its rich instrumentation and polished production, blending elements of jazz, soul, and pop to create a cohesive and sophisticated listening experience.
"Older" was nominated for several awards and won the Brit Award for Best British Male Artist in 1997, further cementing Michael's status as one of the leading artists of his time. The album's success and critical acclaim helped to re-establish his career after the challenges he faced in the early 1990s.
In retrospect, "Older" is often seen as a pivotal album in George Michael's discography. It represents a period of artistic growth and personal reflection, capturing the complexities of love, loss, and the search for meaning. The album's enduring appeal lies in its ability to connect with listeners on an emotional level, offering a glimpse into the heart and mind of one of pop music's most talented and introspective artists.
Overall, "Older" stands as a testament to George Michael's artistry and resilience. It is an album that not only reflects the personal struggles and triumphs of its creator but also resonates with anyone who has experienced the ups and downs of life. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to his music, "Older" is an album that deserves a place in your collection.
