Description

Kim Wilde's album "Now & Forever," released in 1995, marked a significant moment in her career as it showcased her evolution as an artist. Known primarily for her success in the 1980s with hits like "Kids in America" and "You Keep Me Hangin' On," Wilde's transition into the mid-90s was characterized by a more mature sound and a deeper exploration of themes in her music.

"Now & Forever" is Wilde's eighth studio album and was released under MCA Records. The album features a blend of pop, soul, and R&B influences, which was a departure from her earlier, more synth-driven pop sound. This shift in musical style was indicative of Wilde's desire to reinvent herself and stay relevant in the ever-changing music landscape of the 1990s.

The album opens with the track "Breakin' Away," which sets the tone with its upbeat tempo and catchy chorus. This song, along with "This I Swear," are standout tracks that highlight Wilde's vocal prowess and ability to craft memorable pop melodies. "Heaven" is another notable track, offering a more introspective and soulful side of Wilde's artistry.

Critically, "Now & Forever" received mixed reviews. Some critics praised Wilde for her vocal performance and the album's production quality, while others felt that the album lacked the distinctiveness of her earlier work. Despite the mixed critical reception, the album was appreciated by her fan base, who welcomed her new musical direction.

Commercially, "Now & Forever" did not achieve the same level of success as Wilde's earlier albums. It charted modestly in several countries, with its performance being strongest in Europe. The album's lead single, "Breakin' Away," was a moderate hit, particularly in the UK and Germany, where it received airplay and charted within the top 50.

One of the interesting aspects of "Now & Forever" is its production. The album was produced by Ricki Wilde, Kim's brother, who had been a long-time collaborator. The production quality is polished, with a clear emphasis on creating a sound that was contemporary for the mid-90s. This collaboration between siblings added a personal touch to the album, as Ricki Wilde had a deep understanding of Kim's artistic vision.

While "Now & Forever" did not win any major awards, it holds a place in Kim Wilde's discography as a testament to her willingness to experiment and adapt. The album's exploration of different musical styles reflects Wilde's versatility as an artist and her ability to navigate the changing tides of the music industry.

In terms of cultural significance, "Now & Forever" represents a period in the 1990s when many artists from the 1980s were attempting to redefine themselves. Wilde's effort to incorporate R&B and soul elements into her music was part of a broader trend where pop artists sought to diversify their sound to appeal to a new generation of listeners.

Overall, "Now & Forever" is an album that showcases Kim Wilde's growth as an artist. While it may not have achieved the commercial success of her earlier work, it remains an important part of her musical journey. The album's blend of pop and soul, along with its introspective lyrics, offers listeners a glimpse into Wilde's artistic evolution during the mid-90s. For fans of Kim Wilde and those interested in the music of that era, "Now & Forever" is a worthwhile listen that captures a unique moment in her career.
