Description
Lake Street Dive's album "Fun Machine: The Sequel" was released on November 12, 2021, and it serves as a delightful follow-up to their 2012 EP "Fun Machine." This album is a vibrant collection of covers that showcases the band's eclectic influences and their ability to breathe new life into well-known songs. The band, known for their unique blend of pop, rock, jazz, and soul, has once again proven their versatility and charm with this release.
From the very first track, you can feel the energy and enthusiasm that Lake Street Dive brings to their music. The album opens with a spirited rendition of "I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)," originally by The Four Tops. The band infuses it with their signature sound, featuring Rachael Price's powerful vocals that effortlessly glide over the upbeat instrumentation. It’s a perfect introduction to the album, setting the tone for the fun and playful vibe that follows.
One of the standout tracks is their cover of "Rich Girl" by Hall & Oates. Lake Street Dive takes this classic and transforms it into a jazzy, soulful experience that feels fresh and exciting. The arrangement is tight, and the harmonies are spot on, showcasing the band's exceptional musicianship. It’s a testament to how they can take a well-loved song and reinterpret it in a way that feels both nostalgic and new.
The album also features a cover of "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5, which is another highlight. The band’s take on this Motown classic is infused with a playful energy that makes it impossible not to tap your feet along. The instrumentation is lively, and the vocal delivery is both heartfelt and fun, capturing the essence of the original while adding their unique flair.
Critically, "Fun Machine: The Sequel" has been well-received, with many reviewers praising the band’s ability to reinterpret these classics while maintaining their own identity. Major publications like NPR and Rolling Stone have highlighted the album's joyful spirit and the band’s impressive vocal harmonies. NPR noted that the album feels like a celebration, and that’s exactly what it is—a joyful homage to the songs that have influenced the band.
One interesting aspect of this album is the production. The band recorded it during the pandemic, which added a layer of challenge and creativity to the process. They had to adapt to new ways of collaborating and recording, which ultimately led to a more intimate and personal feel in the music. Rachael Price has mentioned in interviews how the experience of recording during such a tumultuous time made the music feel even more special, as it was a way for them to connect with each other and their fans despite the distance.
The album also features a variety of genres, from pop to soul to rock, showcasing the band's diverse influences. This eclectic mix is part of what makes Lake Street Dive so appealing; they are not confined to a single genre, and their ability to traverse different musical styles keeps their sound fresh and engaging.
In terms of cultural significance, "Fun Machine: The Sequel" continues to highlight the importance of community and connection through music, especially in a time when many felt isolated. The album serves as a reminder of the joy that music can bring, and how it can unite people across different backgrounds and experiences.
Overall, "Fun Machine: The Sequel" is a delightful album that captures the essence of Lake Street Dive’s charm and musical prowess. It’s a fun, uplifting collection of covers that not only pays tribute to the original artists but also showcases the band’s unique style. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to their music, this album is sure to bring a smile to your face and get you dancing. So, if you haven’t already, give it a listen—you won’t regret it!
