Description

Lana Del Rey's Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is a unique and intimate project that showcases her poetic sensibilities in a way that feels both personal and expansive. Released on July 28, 2020, this album is not a traditional music album but rather a spoken word collection accompanied by atmospheric music composed by Jack Antonoff. It serves as a companion to her poetry book of the same name, offering a new dimension to her artistry.

The album features Lana reciting her poetry, which is deeply introspective and evocative, over Antonoff's minimalist and ambient soundscapes. The combination creates a meditative and immersive experience, drawing listeners into her world of vivid imagery and emotional depth. The poems touch on themes of love, loss, identity, and the passage of time, all delivered in Lana's signature melancholic and reflective tone.

One of the standout pieces is "LA Who Am I to Love You", a heartfelt ode to Los Angeles that explores her complex relationship with the city. The poem is raw and confessional, with Lana's voice carrying a sense of vulnerability and longing. Another highlight is "Salamander", which showcases her ability to weave intricate and thought-provoking narratives. Each track feels like a window into her soul, offering a glimpse of her thoughts and feelings in a way that is both intimate and universal.

The production by Jack Antonoff complements Lana's poetry beautifully, with subtle piano melodies, ambient textures, and gentle instrumentation that never overshadow her words. The music serves as a backdrop, enhancing the mood and allowing her voice to take centre stage. This collaboration between Lana and Antonoff is a testament to their creative synergy, as they manage to create a cohesive and compelling work that blurs the lines between music and spoken word.

Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass received positive reviews from critics, who praised Lana's poetic talent and the album's innovative approach. It was a departure from her previous work, showcasing a different side of her artistry and further cementing her reputation as a multifaceted and boundary-pushing artist. The project also resonated with fans, who appreciated the honesty and vulnerability in her poetry.

This album is not for everyone, as its spoken word format and experimental nature may not appeal to those expecting a traditional Lana Del Rey record. However, for those willing to embrace its unique style, it offers a rewarding and deeply personal listening experience. It is a testament to Lana's growth as an artist and her willingness to take risks and explore new creative avenues.

In conclusion, Violet Bent Backwards Over the Grass is a captivating and thought-provoking project that highlights Lana Del Rey's poetic prowess and artistic vision. It is a must-listen for fans of her work and anyone interested in the intersection of poetry and music. This album is a reminder of the power of words and the beauty of artistic expression, and it solidifies Lana's place as one of the most innovative and compelling artists of her generation.
