Description

Sparks’ latest offering, *Hippopotamus*, is a delightful return to form for the iconic duo, who have been pushing the boundaries of pop music for over five decades. Released on September 8, 2017, this album showcases the unmistakable wit and eclecticism that has defined their career, while also introducing fresh elements that keep their sound vibrant and engaging. The album is a testament to their enduring creativity and ability to reinvent themselves without losing their unique identity.

From the very first track, the title song "Hippopotamus" sets the tone with its infectious melody and clever lyrics. The song is a quintessential Sparks creation, blending theatricality with a catchy pop sensibility. The playful nature of the lyrics, which reflect on the absurdity of life, is matched by a buoyant arrangement that features lush harmonies and a driving beat. It’s a perfect example of how Sparks can take a seemingly mundane subject and elevate it into something extraordinary. The track has become a fan favorite, and it’s easy to see why; it encapsulates the duo's knack for marrying humor with poignant observations.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Edith Piaf (Said It Better Than Me)," which pays homage to the legendary French singer. The song is a beautiful blend of nostalgia and admiration, with Ron Mael’s distinctive vocals delivering a heartfelt tribute. The lush instrumentation, featuring strings and a rich arrangement, creates an atmospheric backdrop that enhances the emotional weight of the lyrics. This track has been praised by critics for its lyrical depth and melodic sophistication, showcasing Sparks’ ability to craft songs that resonate on multiple levels.

The production on *Hippopotamus* is another highlight, with the duo collaborating with producer John Congleton, known for his work with a diverse range of artists. Congleton’s influence is evident in the polished yet adventurous sound of the album. The production choices are bold, with unexpected shifts in dynamics and instrumentation that keep the listener engaged throughout. Tracks like "I Wish You Were Fun" and "What the Hell Is It This Time?" exemplify this adventurous spirit, with their quirky arrangements and catchy hooks that are sure to stick in your head long after the album ends.

Critics have lauded *Hippopotamus* for its clever songwriting and the duo’s ability to remain relevant in today’s music landscape. Publications like *The Guardian* and *Pitchfork* have highlighted the album as a significant addition to Sparks’ discography, praising its blend of humor and introspection. The album has also been recognized for its cultural significance, as it reflects the duo’s continued exploration of themes that resonate with both long-time fans and new listeners alike.

What’s particularly fascinating about *Hippopotamus* is how it captures the essence of Sparks’ legacy while also feeling fresh and contemporary. The duo, consisting of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, have always been known for their innovative approach to music, and this album is no exception. Their ability to blend genres, from glam rock to art pop, is on full display here, making it a rich listening experience that rewards repeated spins.

In interviews, the Mael brothers have expressed their excitement about the album, noting that they approached the songwriting process with a sense of freedom and playfulness. This is evident in the way the songs flow into one another, creating a cohesive narrative that feels both whimsical and profound. The album’s closing track, "So Tell Me Mrs. Lincoln, Aside from That How Was the Play?" is a fitting conclusion, encapsulating the album’s themes of absurdity and reflection in a way that leaves the listener both amused and contemplative.

Overall, *Hippopotamus* is a triumphant return for Sparks, showcasing their unparalleled ability to blend wit, melody, and innovation. It’s an album that not only honors their storied past but also pushes them into exciting new territory. For fans old and new, this album is a must-listen, proving once again that Sparks are not just surviving but thriving in the ever-evolving landscape of music.
