Description
"Studio One 007 - Licensed To Ska" is a compilation album that showcases the vibrant and influential sounds of Studio One, one of Jamaica's most iconic recording studios. Released by Soul Jazz Records, this album is a treasure trove for fans of ska and early reggae, offering a glimpse into the rich musical heritage that Studio One helped to cultivate.
Studio One, founded by Clement "Coxsone" Dodd in the 1950s, is often referred to as the "Motown of Jamaica." It played a pivotal role in the development of ska, rocksteady, and reggae music, nurturing the careers of many legendary artists. "Studio One 007 - Licensed To Ska" captures the essence of this golden era, featuring a collection of tracks that highlight the studio's contribution to the ska genre.
The album opens with "James Bond" by The Soul Brothers, a track that immediately sets the tone with its infectious rhythm and brass section. The Soul Brothers, led by the talented keyboardist and arranger Jackie Mittoo, were one of Studio One's house bands and played a crucial role in shaping the sound of ska. Their rendition of the James Bond theme is a perfect example of how Jamaican musicians took international influences and made them their own.
Another standout track is "007 (Shanty Town)" by Desmond Dekker & The Aces. This song, originally released in 1967, became an anthem for the rude boy subculture in Jamaica. Dekker's distinctive voice and the song's catchy melody make it a timeless classic that still resonates with listeners today. The inclusion of this track on the compilation underscores Studio One's ability to produce music that transcended cultural and geographical boundaries.
The album also features "Phoenix City" by Roland Alphonso, a saxophonist and founding member of The Skatalites. Alphonso's instrumental prowess is on full display in this track, which combines a driving beat with intricate horn arrangements. The Skatalites were instrumental in popularizing ska music, and Alphonso's contributions to the genre cannot be overstated.
"Studio One 007 - Licensed To Ska" is not just a collection of hits; it also includes lesser-known gems that showcase the depth and diversity of Studio One's catalog. Tracks like "El Pussy Cat Ska" by The Skatalites and "Ska La Parisienne" by Roland Alphonso highlight the studio's ability to experiment with different sounds and styles while staying true to the ska genre.
The production quality of the album is top-notch, thanks to the meticulous remastering by Soul Jazz Records. The tracks sound crisp and vibrant, allowing listeners to fully appreciate the musicianship and creativity that went into each recording. The liner notes provide valuable context and background information, making this compilation not only a musical journey but also an educational experience.
In conclusion, "Studio One 007 - Licensed To Ska" is a must-have for any ska enthusiast or anyone interested in the history of Jamaican music. The album captures the spirit and energy of a pivotal time in music history, showcasing the talents of some of the most influential artists to emerge from Studio One. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to the genre, this compilation offers a comprehensive and enjoyable listening experience that pays homage to the legacy of Studio One and its indelible impact on the world of music.
