Description

"For Those That Wish To Exist" is the ninth studio album by British metalcore band Architects, released on February 26, 2021. This album marks a significant evolution in the band's sound, showcasing a shift towards a more expansive and melodic approach while still retaining the intensity and energy that has characterized their previous work. The album was released through Epitaph Records and was produced by Dan Searle, the band's drummer, and Josh Middleton, the guitarist.

Thematically, "For Those That Wish To Exist" is a concept album that addresses the existential threats facing humanity, particularly focusing on climate change and the need for societal change. The band has described the album as a reflection on the human condition and the urgent need for action to preserve the planet. This thematic focus is evident in the lyrics, which often convey a sense of urgency and a call to arms for listeners to take responsibility for the future.

Musically, the album represents a departure from the heavier, more aggressive sound of previous releases like "Holy Hell" and "All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us." While still rooted in metalcore, "For Those That Wish To Exist" incorporates elements of post-rock, electronic music, and even orchestral arrangements, creating a more diverse and layered sound. This evolution is exemplified in tracks like "Animals," which features a driving, anthemic chorus and a blend of electronic and rock elements, and "Dead Butterflies," which incorporates orchestral strings to create a sweeping, cinematic feel.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Black Lungs," which combines powerful riffs with a catchy, melodic chorus, encapsulating the band's ability to balance heaviness with accessibility. "Meteor" is another highlight, with its infectious hooks and dynamic shifts in tempo and intensity. The album also features several collaborations, including "Impermanence" with Winston McCall of Parkway Drive, "Goliath" featuring Simon Neil of Biffy Clyro, and "Little Wonder" with Mike Kerr of Royal Blood, each adding a unique flavor to the album.

Critically, "For Those That Wish To Exist" received generally positive reviews, with many praising the band's willingness to experiment and evolve their sound. Critics have noted the album's ambitious scope and the band's ability to tackle complex themes while maintaining a strong sense of melody and structure. The album's production has also been highlighted for its clarity and depth, allowing the intricate arrangements to shine through.

Commercially, the album was a success, debuting at number one on the UK Albums Chart, marking the band's first chart-topping release. This achievement underscores the band's growing popularity and the broad appeal of their new musical direction. The album's success is also indicative of the band's ability to resonate with a wide audience, both within and outside the metalcore genre.

"For Those That Wish To Exist" is a significant entry in Architects' discography, representing both a continuation of their thematic concerns and a bold step forward in their musical evolution. The album's exploration of urgent global issues, combined with its innovative sound, makes it a compelling listen for both longtime fans and newcomers. As the band continues to push the boundaries of their genre, "For Those That Wish To Exist" stands as a testament to their creativity and commitment to addressing the pressing challenges of our time.
