Released on January 17, 2020, this album marks a significant return for the band after a five-year hiatus, and it’s clear that they’ve used that time to reflect, grow, and experiment with their sound. The album has been met with a warm reception from both fans and critics alike, and it’s easy to see why.
From the opening track, "Eat, Sleep, Wake (Nothing But You)," listeners are greeted with a burst of energy that sets the tone for the entire album. The song is an infectious anthem that captures the essence of youthful exuberance and the simplicity of love. The jangly guitars and upbeat rhythm create an atmosphere that feels both nostalgic and fresh, a hallmark of Bombay Bicycle Club’s style. It’s a track that invites you to sing along, and it’s no surprise that it quickly became a fan favorite.
One of the standout aspects of this album is its lyrical depth. The band has always been known for their introspective lyrics, and this album is no exception. Tracks like "I Can Hardly Speak" delve into themes of vulnerability and emotional struggle, showcasing a more mature side of the band. The haunting melodies paired with poignant lyrics create a powerful listening experience that resonates deeply with anyone who has faced uncertainty in their lives. The production, handled by the band themselves along with the help of producer and collaborator, Jack Steadman, is polished yet retains an organic feel, allowing the emotional weight of the lyrics to shine through.
"Everything Else Has Gone Wrong" also features a variety of musical styles, reflecting the band’s diverse influences. Songs like "Racing Stripes" incorporate elements of funk and soul, with a groovy bassline that makes it impossible not to move. The blend of genres keeps the album dynamic and engaging, ensuring that there’s something for everyone. The band’s willingness to experiment with different sounds is evident, and it pays off beautifully.
The title track, "Everything Else Has Gone Wrong," is a poignant reflection on the chaos of life and the importance of connection. It’s a song that feels particularly relevant in today’s world, where uncertainty looms large. The chorus is anthemic, and it’s easy to imagine it becoming a rallying cry for those seeking solace in music during tough times. The emotional resonance of this track, combined with its catchy melody, makes it a standout moment on the album.
Critics have praised the album for its cohesive sound and lyrical maturity. NME described it as a "triumphant return" for the band, highlighting how they’ve managed to blend their signature sound with new influences. The Guardian noted the album’s ability to capture the essence of modern life, with all its ups and downs, making it relatable to a wide audience. This critical acclaim is a testament to the band’s growth and their ability to connect with listeners on a deeper level.
In interviews, the band members have expressed how the time apart allowed them to explore their individual musical interests, which ultimately enriched the collaborative process for this album. They’ve mentioned that the experience of writing and recording together again felt like coming home, and that sense of familiarity is palpable throughout the album. The chemistry between the band members shines through, making each track feel like a collective effort rather than a solo endeavor.
Overall, "Everything Else Has Gone Wrong" is a remarkable addition to Bombay Bicycle Club’s discography. It captures the essence of their journey as a band while also pushing the boundaries of their sound.
