Description
Dan Auerbach's debut solo album, Keep It Hid, released on February 10, 2009, is a compelling exploration of his musical roots and influences. Known primarily as one half of The Black Keys, Auerbach steps out on his own here, crafting a record that feels both personal and expansive. While The Black Keys' sound is often stripped-down and raw, Keep It Hid allows Auerbach to experiment with a broader sonic palette, incorporating elements of folk, country, and soul into his signature blues-rock foundation.
The album opens with "Trouble Weighs a Ton", a hauntingly beautiful acoustic track that sets the tone for the introspective journey ahead. Auerbach's voice, raw and emotive, carries the weight of the lyrics with a sincerity that immediately draws the listener in. From there, the album moves through a variety of moods and styles, showcasing Auerbach's versatility as a musician and songwriter.
Tracks like "I Want Some More" and "Heartbroken, In Disrepair" highlight Auerbach's ability to craft gritty, groove-laden rock songs, while "Whispered Words (Pretty Lies)" and "When the Night Comes" reveal a softer, more contemplative side. The production, handled by Auerbach himself, is warm and organic, with a vintage feel that complements the timeless quality of the songs.
One of the standout tracks is "Mean Monsoon", a sultry, swampy number that perfectly captures the album's blend of grit and soul. Another highlight is "My Last Mistake", which features a driving rhythm and a catchy, melancholic melody that lingers long after the song ends. Throughout the album, Auerbach's guitar work is exceptional, ranging from delicate fingerpicking to searing solos, always serving the song rather than overshadowing it.
Keep It Hid received positive reviews upon its release, with critics praising Auerbach's songwriting and the album's cohesive yet diverse sound. It also provided a glimpse into the influences that have shaped Auerbach's musical identity, from the blues and gospel of his native Ohio to the country and soul traditions of the American South. While it may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as The Black Keys' later albums, Keep It Hid remains a beloved record among fans and a testament to Auerbach's talent as a solo artist.
In many ways, Keep It Hid feels like a labour of love, a chance for Auerbach to explore his musical passions without the constraints of a band dynamic. It's a record that rewards repeated listens, revealing new layers and nuances with each spin. Whether you're a longtime fan of The Black Keys or new to Auerbach's work, Keep It Hid is well worth a listen, offering a rich, immersive experience that showcases one of modern rock's most distinctive voices.
