Description

Released on August 26, 2016, "How To Be A Human Being" by Glass Animals is an album that truly encapsulates the essence of modern indie pop, blending eclectic sounds with relatable storytelling. This sophomore effort from the British band follows their debut album, "Zaba," and showcases a significant evolution in their sound and lyrical depth. The album was well-received, earning a nomination for Best Alternative Music Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards, which is a testament to its impact and the band's growing prominence in the music scene.

From the very first track, "Life Itself," listeners are drawn into a vibrant world filled with infectious beats and catchy melodies. The song sets the tone for the album, with its upbeat tempo and introspective lyrics that explore the complexities of life and human experience. The production, handled by the band themselves, is polished yet retains a raw, organic feel that makes it relatable. The use of various instruments and sounds, including samples and electronic elements, creates a rich tapestry that is both innovative and accessible.

One of the standout tracks, "Youth," captures the essence of nostalgia and the fleeting nature of youth. The lyrics reflect a yearning for simpler times, and the dreamy soundscape perfectly complements the theme. It’s a song that resonates with many, evoking memories of carefree days and the bittersweet nature of growing up. The chorus is particularly memorable, making it a favorite among fans and a staple in their live performances.

Another highlight is "Gooey," which features a sultry, laid-back vibe that showcases the band’s ability to blend genres seamlessly. The track's hypnotic rhythm and whimsical lyrics create an almost dreamlike atmosphere, making it a perfect example of Glass Animals' unique sound. The song became a commercial success, further solidifying the band's place in the indie pop landscape.

Critics have praised the album for its innovative approach and lyrical depth. Major publications like Pitchfork and NME lauded the band for their ability to craft songs that are both catchy and thought-provoking. Pitchfork described the album as a "vivid exploration of the human experience," highlighting the way the band weaves personal stories into their music. This ability to connect with listeners on a personal level is one of the reasons why Glass Animals have garnered such a dedicated fanbase.

The cultural significance of "How To Be A Human Being" cannot be understated. In a time when many artists were focusing on polished, mainstream sounds, Glass Animals took a different route, embracing a more experimental approach. The album reflects a generation grappling with identity, technology, and the complexities of modern life. It resonates with listeners who find themselves navigating the challenges of adulthood in an increasingly digital world.

Interestingly, the album's concept is inspired by the stories of various people the band encountered during their travels. Each track represents a different character, giving the album a narrative quality that invites listeners to engage with the music on a deeper level. This storytelling aspect is something that sets Glass Animals apart from many of their contemporaries, as they create a world that feels both personal and universal.

In terms of production, the band utilized a variety of techniques to achieve their signature sound. They incorporated field recordings and unique instruments, which adds an organic layer to the electronic elements. This blend of sounds creates a rich auditory experience that keeps listeners coming back for more.

Overall, "How To Be A Human Being" is a remarkable album that showcases Glass Animals' growth as artists and their ability to connect with audiences through relatable themes and innovative sounds. It’s an album that invites you to dance, reflect, and ultimately, feel a little more human. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to their music, this album is a must-listen that captures the essence of what it means to navigate life in the modern world.
