Description

Hockey Dad's sophomore album, "Blend Inn," released in February 2018, is a vibrant exploration of surf rock and garage punk, showcasing the Australian duo's knack for catchy melodies and energetic performances. Comprised of Zach Stephenson on vocals and guitar and Billy Fleming on drums, Hockey Dad hails from Windang, New South Wales, and their music often reflects the laid-back, sun-soaked vibes of their coastal upbringing.

"Blend Inn" was recorded in Seattle, Washington, at the renowned Robert Lang Studios, a location known for its association with iconic bands like Nirvana and Foo Fighters. This setting provided a fitting backdrop for the album's raw and gritty sound, which is a step forward from their debut album, "Boronia." The production, handled by John Goodmanson, who has worked with bands like Sleater-Kinney and Death Cab for Cutie, adds a polished edge to the duo's sound without sacrificing their inherent energy and authenticity.

The album opens with "My Stride," a track that immediately sets the tone with its driving rhythm and infectious hooks. Stephenson's vocals are both earnest and powerful, perfectly complementing the punchy guitar riffs and Fleming's dynamic drumming. This track, along with others like "I Wanna Be Everybody" and "Join the Club," captures the essence of youthful rebellion and the desire to carve out one's identity in a world that often demands conformity.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Homely Feeling," which was released as a single prior to the album's launch. The song's catchy chorus and upbeat tempo make it an instant favorite, and its themes of homesickness and longing resonate with listeners who have ever felt out of place. Another highlight is "Sweet Release," a track that combines introspective lyrics with a more subdued musical arrangement, showcasing the band's ability to balance high-energy anthems with more reflective moments.

"Blend Inn" received positive reviews from critics, who praised the album for its cohesive sound and the duo's growth as musicians. The album was noted for its ability to capture the spirit of 90s alternative rock while still feeling fresh and relevant. Critics also appreciated the band's ability to infuse their music with personal experiences and emotions, making the album relatable to a wide audience.

While "Blend Inn" did not win any major awards, it solidified Hockey Dad's place in the indie rock scene and helped them gain a larger international following. The album's success led to extensive touring, including performances at major music festivals and sold-out shows across Australia, the United States, and Europe. This increased exposure helped the band reach new fans and further establish their reputation as a must-see live act.

Culturally, "Blend Inn" resonates with the themes of youth and the search for belonging, which are universal experiences. The album's title itself reflects the idea of trying to fit in while also standing out, a concept that many listeners can relate to. The music video for "Join the Club," which features the band in various humorous scenarios, further emphasizes the album's playful yet introspective nature.

In conclusion, "Blend Inn" is a testament to Hockey Dad's ability to craft engaging and memorable music that speaks to the experiences of their generation. The album's blend of energetic rock anthems and thoughtful lyrics makes it a standout in the indie rock genre, and its success has paved the way for the band's continued growth and evolution. With "Blend Inn," Hockey Dad has proven that they are more than just a surf rock band; they are talented musicians with a unique voice and a bright future ahead.
