Description

Johnny Marr's second solo album, Playland, released on 6 October 2014, is a vibrant continuation of the sound he established with his debut, The Messenger. Known primarily as the legendary guitarist of The Smiths, Marr has spent decades contributing his distinctive style to various projects, but his solo work allows him to fully embrace his own voice, both musically and literally.

Playland is an album that feels urgent and alive, with a driving energy that runs through its 11 tracks. Marr's guitar work is, as always, a highlight. His signature jangly riffs and intricate melodies are present, but there's also a rawness and immediacy to the production that gives the album a modern edge. The opening track, "Back in the Box", sets the tone with its propulsive rhythm and sharp hooks, while "Easy Money", the lead single, is a standout with its catchy chorus and danceable groove. The song critiques materialism with a sly wit, showcasing Marr's ability to pair thoughtful lyrics with infectious melodies.

Thematically, Playland explores urban life, desire, and the human condition, drawing inspiration from the concept of "play" as a fundamental aspect of human behaviour. Marr has mentioned in interviews that the album's title and themes were influenced by Dutch historian Johan Huizinga's book Homo Ludens, which examines the importance of play in culture and society. This intellectual underpinning adds depth to the album, but the songs themselves remain accessible and immediate.

Tracks like "Dynamo" and "Candidate" highlight Marr's knack for crafting anthemic choruses and dynamic arrangements. His vocals, while not as celebrated as his guitar playing, have a sincerity and character that suit the material well. There's a confidence in his delivery that has grown since his debut, and it helps to anchor the album's themes of movement and vitality.

The production on Playland is crisp and polished, with a focus on rhythm and texture. Marr worked with producer Doviak, who also contributed to The Messenger, and the collaboration results in a cohesive sound that balances the organic and the electronic. The rhythm section, featuring Iwan Gronow on bass and Jack Mitchell on drums, provides a solid foundation for Marr's guitar work, and the occasional use of synths adds a modern touch.

While Playland doesn't stray too far from the formula established on The Messenger, it feels like a natural progression. Marr seems more assured in his role as a solo artist, and the album benefits from this confidence. It's a record that rewards repeated listens, as the intricacies of the arrangements and the subtleties of the lyrics reveal themselves over time.

In the context of Marr's career, Playland is a testament to his enduring creativity and relevance. It's a reminder that, even after decades in the music industry, he remains a vital and innovative artist. For fans of his work, both past and present, the album is a must-listen, and for newcomers, it's a compelling introduction to his solo output. With Playland, Johnny Marr proves that he's not just a legendary guitarist, but a formidable songwriter and performer in his own right.
