Description
"Boomslang", the debut album by Johnny Marr + The Healers, was released on February 4, 2003. This record marked a significant moment in Johnny Marr's career, as it was his first major project as a frontman, stepping out from his iconic role as the guitarist for The Smiths and his collaborations with other artists. Marr, known for his jangly guitar work and innovative playing style, took on the roles of lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter for this album, showcasing a different side of his musical talents.
The Healers consisted of Johnny Marr on vocals and guitar, Zak Starkey (son of Ringo Starr) on drums, and Alonza Bevan (of Kula Shaker) on bass. This lineup brought together a wealth of experience and talent, and their chemistry is evident throughout the album. The sound of "Boomslang" is a blend of alternative rock with psychedelic influences, creating a lush and textured sonic landscape. Marr's signature guitar work is, of course, a highlight, but the album also explores grooves and rhythms that give it a unique identity.
The opening track, "The Last Ride", sets the tone with its driving rhythm and layered guitars. Marr's vocals, while not as distinctive as his guitar playing, suit the material well and convey a sense of earnestness. "Down on the Corner" and "Bangin' On" are other standout tracks, showcasing the band's ability to craft catchy, dynamic songs with a strong melodic core. The production, handled by Marr himself, is polished yet retains a raw energy that complements the music.
While "Boomslang" received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics praising Marr's ambition and others feeling the album lacked the spark of his earlier work, it has since gained a cult following among fans. The album's exploration of different styles and its cohesive sound make it a fascinating listen, especially for those interested in Marr's evolution as an artist. It also serves as a reminder of his versatility and willingness to take creative risks.
In retrospect, "Boomslang" stands as an intriguing chapter in Johnny Marr's career. It may not have achieved the commercial success of his work with The Smiths or his later solo albums, but it remains a testament to his artistry and his ability to push boundaries. For fans of Marr's guitar work and those curious about his foray into fronting a band, "Boomslang" is well worth revisiting.
