"When You See Yourself" is Kings Of Leon's eighth studio album, originally released in 2021. Initially embraced as "the Southern Strokes" for their resurrection and reinvention of Dixie-styled rock & roll, Kings of Leon steadily morphed into an adventurous arena rock outfit during the 2000s, eventually achieving a blockbuster breakthrough with 2008's Only by the Night, an album that generated the international hits "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody."

"When You See Yourself," the eighth studio album by Kings of Leon, was released on March 5, 2021. This album marks a significant moment for the band, as it was their first release in five years since "WALLS" in 2016. The anticipation was palpable among fans who were eager to see how the band would evolve their sound after such a hiatus.

The album was produced by Markus Dravs, who is known for his work with bands like Arcade Fire and Coldplay. Dravs' influence is evident in the album's expansive soundscapes and polished production. "When You See Yourself" continues Kings of Leon's exploration of their Southern rock roots while incorporating more atmospheric and introspective elements.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "The Bandit," which was also the lead single. It features a driving rhythm and catchy guitar riffs that harken back to the band's earlier work, yet it feels fresh and modern. The song's lyrics, like much of the album, reflect themes of self-reflection and identity, which are particularly resonant given the album's title.

Another notable track is "100,000 People," which showcases a more mellow and contemplative side of the band. The song's dreamy quality and introspective lyrics invite listeners to ponder the passage of time and the connections we make with others. It's a beautiful example of how Kings of Leon have matured in their songwriting, offering depth and nuance that rewards repeated listens.

Critically, "When You See Yourself" received a mixed to positive reception. Some reviewers praised the album for its cohesive sound and the band's willingness to experiment with new textures and themes. For instance, NME highlighted the album's "lush, expansive sound" and noted that it "feels like a band comfortable in their own skin." However, other critics felt that the album lacked the raw energy and immediacy of the band's earlier work, with some tracks blending into one another without leaving a strong impression.

Despite the mixed reviews, "When You See Yourself" was appreciated by fans who had been eagerly awaiting new material from the band. The album debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, demonstrating the band's enduring popularity and the loyalty of their fanbase.

In terms of cultural significance, "When You See Yourself" arrived at a time when the world was grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic. The themes of introspection and self-discovery resonated with many listeners who were experiencing similar feelings of uncertainty and reflection during lockdowns and social distancing.

Kings of Leon also made headlines with the release of "When You See Yourself" by embracing new technology. They became one of the first major bands to release an album as a non-fungible token (NFT), a move that sparked discussions about the future of music distribution and the potential for artists to connect with fans in innovative ways.

Overall, "When You See Yourself" is a testament to Kings of Leon's ability to evolve and adapt while staying true to their roots. It's an album that invites listeners to look inward and consider their own identities, all while enjoying the rich, layered soundscapes that the band has crafted. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to their music, this album offers something to appreciate and reflect upon.
