Description

Midnight Oil - Breathe LP Vinyl Record

"Breathe," released by Midnight Oil on October 15, 1996, is an album that showcases the band's ability to blend rock with socially conscious themes. Known for their politically charged lyrics and energetic performances, Midnight Oil took a slightly different approach with "Breathe," incorporating more acoustic elements and a laid-back vibe compared to their previous work.

The album was recorded in New Orleans, which influenced its sound significantly. The city’s rich musical heritage seeped into the album, giving it a unique flavor that distinguishes it from the band’s earlier, more aggressive albums. The production was handled by Malcolm Burn, who had previously worked with artists like Bob Dylan and Emmylou Harris. His influence is evident in the album's more subdued and introspective sound.

One of the standout tracks on "Breathe" is "Underwater," which opens the album with a haunting melody and reflective lyrics. The song sets the tone for the rest of the album, which explores themes of environmentalism, personal introspection, and social justice. Another notable track is "Surf's Up Tonight," which captures the essence of the band's Australian roots with its breezy, coastal vibe.

"E-Beat" is another track that deserves mention, as it combines the band's signature rock sound with a more experimental approach. The song's lyrics address the impact of technology and media on society, a theme that remains relevant today. "Barest Degree" and "Gravelrash" also stand out for their lyrical depth and musical complexity.

Critically, "Breathe" received mixed reviews upon its release. Some critics appreciated the band's willingness to experiment and explore new musical territories, while others missed the raw energy and political fervor of their earlier albums like "Diesel and Dust." However, the album has aged well, with many fans and critics revisiting it and appreciating its subtlety and craftsmanship.

In terms of commercial success, "Breathe" did not achieve the same level of acclaim as some of Midnight Oil's previous albums, but it still holds a special place in the band's discography. It represents a period of transition and experimentation for the band, as they sought to expand their musical horizons and address new themes in their work.

One interesting aspect of "Breathe" is how it reflects the band's personal experiences and growth. Frontman Peter Garrett, known for his activism and later political career, brings a sense of maturity and introspection to the album's lyrics. The band members have often spoken about how the recording process in New Orleans influenced their approach to music, allowing them to explore different sounds and ideas.

Overall, "Breathe" is an album that may not have received the same level of attention as some of Midnight Oil's more iconic releases, but it remains an important part of their musical journey. It showcases the band's ability to evolve and adapt, while still staying true to their core values and message. For fans of Midnight Oil, "Breathe" offers a different perspective on the band’s music, one that is worth exploring for its depth and diversity.
