Description

Released on March 20, 2007, "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" is Modest Mouse's fifth studio album and a significant entry in their discography. This album marked a pivotal moment for the band, as it was their first release after signing with a major label, Epic Records, and it also featured the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, which brought a fresh dynamic to their sound.

From the get-go, the album showcases Modest Mouse's signature blend of indie rock with a touch of experimentalism. The opening track, "March Into the Sea," sets the tone with its driving rhythm and introspective lyrics, encapsulating the band's ability to weave complex themes into catchy melodies. The album's lead single, "Dashboard," is a standout track that perfectly exemplifies this. With its infectious chorus and jangly guitars, it became a fan favorite and received significant airplay, helping to propel the album to commercial success.

Critically, "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" was well-received, earning a spot on several year-end lists and even receiving a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. Major publications like Pitchfork and Rolling Stone praised the album for its ambitious sound and lyrical depth. Pitchfork, in particular, highlighted the band's ability to balance their quirky, off-kilter style with more accessible pop sensibilities, a feat that many fans appreciated.

One of the most interesting aspects of this album is the collaboration with Johnny Marr. His influence is palpable throughout the record, adding layers of texture and melody that enhance Modest Mouse's already rich sound. Marr's guitar work on tracks like "Missed the Boat" and "We've Got Everything" brings a new dimension to the band's music, blending seamlessly with Isaac Brock's distinctive vocal style and lyrical storytelling.

Lyrically, the album delves into themes of existentialism, loss, and the human condition, which are hallmarks of Brock's writing. Songs like "Float On" from their previous album had already established the band's knack for addressing heavy topics with a sense of hope, and this album continues that tradition. The track "Education" stands out with its biting commentary on societal issues, showcasing Brock's sharp wit and critical eye.

The production of the album is another noteworthy aspect. Produced by Dennis Herring, who had previously worked with the band on their earlier albums, the sound is polished yet retains the raw energy that fans love. The mix of instruments, including strings and brass, adds a richness that complements the band's eclectic style. The album's title itself is a metaphorical nod to the idea of being doomed before even starting, which resonates with the overarching themes of the album.

In terms of cultural significance, this album came at a time when indie rock was gaining mainstream traction, and Modest Mouse was at the forefront of that movement. Their unique sound and lyrical depth helped to shape the landscape of alternative music in the late 2000s. The album's success also paved the way for other indie bands to explore major label deals without losing their artistic integrity.

Personal anecdotes from band members about the making of the album reveal a mix of excitement and pressure. Isaac Brock has mentioned in interviews how the addition of Marr brought a new energy to the writing process, and how the band was eager to explore new musical territories. This sense of adventure is palpable in the album's diverse soundscapes.

Overall, "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" is a testament to Modest Mouse's evolution as a band. It captures a moment in time where they were balancing their indie roots with the demands of a larger audience, all while continuing to push the boundaries of their sound. With its memorable tracks and thought-provoking lyrics, this album remains a significant part of Modest Mouse's legacy and a beloved favorite among fans.
