Description

No Age, the Los Angeles-based noise rock duo, returns with their fifth studio album, "Goons Be Gone." Known for their experimental sound and DIY ethos, No Age continues to push boundaries and challenge conventions with this latest release. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, the album showcases the band's evolution while staying true to their signature style.

"Goons Be Gone" opens with the energetic track "Sandalwood," immediately setting the tone for the album. The song features distorted guitars, pounding drums, and the raw vocals of Dean Spunt. It's a powerful introduction that grabs the listener's attention and sets the stage for what's to come.

Throughout the album, No Age explores a range of sonic textures and moods. Tracks like "Feeler" and "Smoothie" showcase the band's ability to create catchy melodies amidst the chaos. The combination of fuzzy guitars, driving rhythms, and Spunt's impassioned vocals creates a sense of urgency and intensity that is characteristic of No Age's sound.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Turned to String." It starts with a hypnotic guitar riff that gradually builds up, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere. The song then explodes into a cacophony of noise, showcasing the band's ability to create dynamic and unpredictable compositions. It's a thrilling and immersive experience that highlights No Age's mastery of their craft.

Lyrically, "Goons Be Gone" touches on themes of isolation, disillusionment, and the struggle to find meaning in a chaotic world. The lyrics are often abstract and open to interpretation, allowing the listener to connect with the music on a personal level. No Age's ability to convey emotion through their music is a testament to their songwriting prowess.

The production on "Goons Be Gone" is another notable aspect of the album. The band worked with producer Jorge Elbrecht, known for his work with artists like Ariel Pink and Wild Nothing. Elbrecht's influence can be heard in the album's polished sound, which enhances the impact of No Age's raw and abrasive sound.

While "Goons Be Gone" is undoubtedly a strong album, it does have a few moments that feel less memorable. Tracks like "War Dance" and "Toes in the Water" don't quite reach the same level of excitement and innovation as some of the other songs on the album. However, these moments are few and far between, and overall, the album maintains a consistent level of quality.

In conclusion, No Age's "Goons Be Gone" is a powerful and captivating album that showcases the band's growth and experimentation. With its blend of noise rock, punk, and shoegaze influences, the album is a testament to No Age's ability to create music that is both challenging and accessible. While it may not be their most groundbreaking release, "Goons Be Gone" is a solid addition to No Age's discography and a must-listen for fans of the genre.
