Description
"Be Here Now" by Oasis is one of those albums that, despite its polarizing reception at the time of its release on August 21, 1997, has carved out a unique place in the pantheon of Britpop history. Coming off the monumental success of their previous albums, "Definitely Maybe" and "(What's the Story) Morning Glory?", expectations were sky-high, and the pressure was on for the Gallagher brothers and their bandmates.
The album was produced during a tumultuous period for the band, marked by the members' well-documented struggles with fame and their personal lives. This backdrop is crucial in understanding the grandiosity and excess that "Be Here Now" embodies. It's an album that's often criticized for its over-the-top production and lengthy tracks, but these are also features that many fans and some critics have grown to appreciate, viewing them as a snapshot of a band at its most bombastic and unapologetically bold.
Upon its release, "Be Here Now" became the fastest-selling album in UK chart history at that time, a testament to the immense anticipation and the band's popularity. However, the initial excitement was quickly tempered by mixed reviews from critics. Many felt that the album was overly indulgent, with sprawling songs and a dense production that lacked the immediacy and charm of their earlier work. Despite this, tracks like "D'You Know What I Mean?" and "Stand By Me" managed to resonate with a large audience, showcasing Noel Gallagher's knack for anthemic songwriting.
The album's production, led by Owen Morris alongside Noel, is famously lavish, with layers upon layers of guitars, keyboards, and other effects. This 'everything but the kitchen sink' approach has been both a point of criticism and a source of fascination. The recording sessions at Abbey Road Studios were reportedly fueled by the era's rock and roll excesses, something that Noel Gallagher has reflected on in later years with a mix of fondness and regret.
In terms of awards and nominations, "Be Here Now" did not garner the accolades that Oasis' previous albums did. Its critical standing has improved somewhat over time, with some now viewing it as an underrated chapter in the band's history, though it remains divisive.
Culturally, "Be Here Now" marks the moment when Britpop started to lose its grip on the public's imagination, with the music scene shifting towards new genres and sounds. However, the album's release was a significant event, symbolizing the peak and impending decline of one of the UK's most famous music movements.
Standout tracks like "Don't Go Away" and the epic "All Around the World" reflect the high points of the album's ambitious scope. "All Around the World," in particular, is notable for being one of the longest singles in UK chart history, and its lavish music video is a testament to the era's no-expense-spared approach to everything Oasis.
In retrospect, "Be Here Now" is a fascinating listen, not just for its place in music history but for its portrayal of a band at its most fearless. It's an album that, for better or worse, encapsulates the swagger and overreach of late 90s rock music. Whether it's viewed as a cautionary tale of excess or a misunderstood gem, "Be Here Now" remains an essential chapter in the story of Oasis and Britpop.
