Description
"Woodstock," an album by Portugal. The Man, is a vibrant and eclectic mix that seems to capture the spirit of its namesake festival while firmly planting itself in the contemporary music scene. Released on June 16, 2017, this album marks a significant evolution in the band’s sound and has a fascinating backstory that adds depth to its reception and appreciation.
The creation of "Woodstock" was inspired by an original 1969 Woodstock music festival ticket stub owned by band member John Gourley’s father. This piece of history reportedly pushed the band to scrap an almost completed album and start afresh, aiming to channel the same spirit of change and activism that defined the original Woodstock era. This anecdote not only sets the stage for the album but also connects it to a broader cultural heritage, adding layers of meaning to the listening experience.
Musically, "Woodstock" strays somewhat from Portugal. The Man’s earlier, more indie rock-focused work, leaning into pop, electronic, and hip-hop influences. This shift is most evident in the standout track "Feel It Still," which became a breakout hit. It’s an upbeat, danceable tune that cleverly mixes vintage soul with modern pop elements. "Feel It Still" not only won the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance but also became a defining track of the year, featured in numerous commercials, TV shows, and more, effectively broadening the band’s audience.
The album as a whole received mixed reviews from critics. While some praised its adventurous sound and political undertones, others felt the shift towards a more mainstream pop sound was a step back from the band’s earlier, more unique productions. However, tracks like "Rich Friends" and "Live in the Moment" showcase the band’s ability to create catchy, robust anthems that still offer thoughtful commentary on materialism and the human condition.
Production-wise, "Woodstock" features work from a variety of influential producers, including Mike D from the Beastie Boys, Danger Mouse, and John Hill. This mix of perspectives adds a rich texture to the album, with each producer bringing their unique flair to the tracks, helping to fuse the old with the new in surprising and delightful ways.
Despite the polarized critical reception, "Woodstock" undeniably marked a significant moment in Portugal. The Man’s career. It brought them into the mainstream spotlight and demonstrated their ability to evolve and adapt their music style while trying to maintain their integrity and roots. The album’s connection to the historical Woodstock and the way it attempts to address the social issues of its time (much like the 1969 festival did) provides a deeper, more resonant context for listeners.
In conclusion, "Woodstock" by Portugal. The Man is an album that, while perhaps not as cohesive as some of their earlier work, offers a fascinating glimpse into the band’s creative process and their response to contemporary societal issues. It’s a bold, if somewhat uneven, attempt to marry the past with the present, using music as a bridge. With its infectious beats and thoughtful lyrics, "Woodstock" invites listeners to not only enjoy the music but also to reflect on the messages woven throughout the tracks. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to the band, this album provides plenty to explore and enjoy.
