Description
"Pretenders II," the second studio album by the iconic rock band The Pretenders, was released on June 1, 1981. This album followed their self-titled debut, which had already established them as a formidable force in the rock scene. With its blend of punk rock energy and pop sensibility, "Pretenders II" continued to showcase the unique sound that Chrissie Hynde and her bandmates had crafted, solidifying their place in music history.
From the get-go, the album is a testament to the band's evolution. It opens with the infectious track "Message of Love," which sets the tone with its driving beat and Hynde's unmistakable vocals. The song is a perfect example of how The Pretenders managed to merge catchy melodies with a raw edge, a hallmark of their style. Critics at the time praised the album for its lyrical depth and musicality, with many noting that Hynde's songwriting had matured since their debut.
One of the standout tracks on the album is undoubtedly "Talk of the Town." This song features a more reflective tone, with lyrics that explore themes of love and longing. The instrumentation is lush yet understated, allowing Hynde's voice to take center stage. The song received significant airplay and remains a fan favorite, often included in the band's live sets. It’s interesting to note that "Talk of the Town" was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, highlighting the album's critical acclaim.
Another notable track is "I Go to Sleep," which was originally written by Ray Davies of The Kinks. The Pretenders' version is hauntingly beautiful, showcasing Hynde's ability to convey deep emotion through her vocal delivery. This cover not only pays homage to the original but also adds a unique twist that makes it distinctly theirs. The song's inclusion on the album further demonstrates the band's eclectic influences and willingness to experiment with different styles.
The production of "Pretenders II" was handled by Chris Thomas, who had previously worked with bands like The Sex Pistols and Roxy Music. His expertise in blending rock with pop elements is evident throughout the album, giving it a polished yet gritty feel. The album's sound is characterized by jangly guitars, tight rhythms, and Hynde's powerful vocals, all of which contribute to its timeless quality.
Critically, "Pretenders II" received a warm reception from major publications. Rolling Stone praised the album for its "sharp songwriting and vibrant performances," while NME highlighted the band's ability to balance commercial appeal with artistic integrity. The album was seen as a strong follow-up to their debut, proving that The Pretenders were not just a one-hit wonder but a band with staying power.
In terms of cultural significance, "Pretenders II" came at a time when the music scene was rapidly changing. The early 1980s saw the rise of new wave and synth-pop, yet The Pretenders managed to carve out their niche by staying true to their rock roots. This album helped to bridge the gap between the punk ethos of the late '70s and the more polished sounds of the '80s, influencing countless artists who followed.
Reflecting on the album, Hynde has mentioned in interviews how the pressures of fame and the music industry began to weigh on her during this period. The band's dynamic was also shifting, with lineup changes and personal struggles affecting their creative process. Despite these challenges, "Pretenders II" stands as a testament to their resilience and artistic vision.
In conclusion, "Pretenders II" is not just a sequel; it’s a bold statement that showcases The Pretenders' growth as musicians and songwriters. With its memorable tracks, critical acclaim, and cultural impact, the album remains a significant part of rock history. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to their music, this album is definitely worth a listen, as it captures the essence of a band that continues to inspire and resonate with audiences today.
