Description
Just before the first verse of To Defy the Laws of Tradition, Claypool pops a sly harmonic then yanks the groove sideways, classic Primus mischief. Frizzle Fry is their wiry debut, all rubbery bass, Larry LaLonde’s bent guitar figures, and Tim Alexander’s martial snap. Too Many Puppies still hits, a lurching anti-war chant with drums like a parade gone wrong. John the Fisherman remains the gateway riff, sailing into a chorus that sticks for days.
This clear/purple split pressing gives the music more breathing room; the low end sits deeper without smearing the kick. Imaging also feels wider, so those oddball guitar scrapes and snare ghosts sit where they should.
It belongs right next to Mr. Bungle and the late 80s/early 90s alt-metal fringe in your shelf, but it’s funkier and more elastic. If you’d rather order online, you can buy Primus records online with us. Spin it at a small house gathering or on a late tram back through the city, and the grin count goes up immediately.
Fans of the early Primus era will appreciate how unvarnished and playful this still sounds. The color split suits the album’s oddball mood without shouting for attention. File it under debut statements that still feel unruly. Available online now or in our Melbourne shop, an easy pick for any Primus fan.
