Description
R.E.M.'s "Lifes Rich Pageant" is a landmark album that captures the essence of the band’s evolution during the 1980s, a time when they were transitioning from cult favorites to mainstream icons. Released on July 28, 1986, this album is often hailed as one of their finest works, showcasing a blend of jangly guitars, introspective lyrics, and a more polished production that still retains the raw energy of their earlier sound.
From the opening track, "Begin the Begin," the album sets a tone that is both urgent and reflective. The song bursts forth with a driving rhythm and Michael Stipe’s distinctive vocals, which are both cryptic and compelling. The lyrics touch on themes of change and renewal, a fitting introduction to an album that explores the complexities of life and the human experience. The infectious energy of this track is a perfect example of how R.E.M. was able to marry thoughtful lyrics with catchy melodies, a formula that would become their signature.
One of the standout tracks, "Fall on Me," features a beautiful harmony between Stipe and guest vocalist, the late Bill Berry, who also plays drums on the track. The song’s poignant lyrics about support and connection resonate deeply, and the lush instrumentation elevates it to a near-anthemic status. It’s a fan favorite that showcases the band’s ability to create emotionally charged music that feels both personal and universal.
The production on "Lifes Rich Pageant" marks a significant step forward for R.E.M. They worked with producer Don Gehman, known for his work with artists like John Mellencamp, and the collaboration resulted in a more polished sound without sacrificing the band’s distinctive style. The album features a rich tapestry of instrumentation, with Peter Buck’s jangly guitar riffs, Mike Mills’ melodic bass lines, and Berry’s dynamic drumming all coming together to create a cohesive sound that is both vibrant and textured.
Critics at the time praised the album for its lyrical depth and musicality. Rolling Stone described it as a "brilliantly crafted album" that captures the band at a pivotal moment in their career. The album’s critical reception was overwhelmingly positive, and it solidified R.E.M.’s place in the pantheon of alternative rock. It was also a commercial success, reaching the top 30 on the Billboard 200 and eventually being certified gold by the RIAA.
Another highlight is "These Days," a track that features a more somber tone, reflecting on the passage of time and the inevitability of change. The haunting melody and Stipe’s evocative delivery make it a standout moment on the album. The song’s introspective nature is a testament to R.E.M.’s ability to tackle complex themes with grace and artistry.
"Lifes Rich Pageant" also includes the energetic "What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?" which, while not a single from this album, became a cultural touchstone in the years that followed. The phrase itself became a part of the lexicon, famously referenced in a later incident involving news anchor Dan Rather. This track, along with others on the album, showcases R.E.M.’s knack for blending the personal with the political, a theme that would continue to resonate throughout their career.
The album’s closing track, "Superman," is a cover of the 1969 song by The Clique, and it serves as a fun, upbeat conclusion to the album. R.E.M.’s version is infused with their signature sound, and it’s a delightful reminder of their ability to reinterpret and breathe new life into existing songs. It’s a fitting end to an album that celebrates the richness of life, with all its ups and downs.
In retrospect, "Lifes Rich Pageant" stands as a crucial moment in R.E.M.’s discography, bridging the gap between their early, more experimental work and their later, more commercially successful albums. It’s an album that not only showcases their musical prowess but also their lyrical depth, making it a timeless piece of art that continues to resonate with fans old and new. Whether you’re revisiting it or discovering it for the first time, this album is a rich tapestry of sound and meaning that deserves a place in any music lover’s collection.
