Description
"Take Her Up to Monto!" is the fourth studio album by Irish singer Róisín Murphy, released on July 8, 2016, by Play It Again Sam. Known for her eclectic style and innovative approach to music, Murphy continues to push boundaries with this album, which follows her critically acclaimed 2015 release, "Hairless Toys."
The album's title, "Take Her Up to Monto," is a reference to a traditional Irish folk song, which adds a layer of cultural depth and personal significance. Murphy's work often reflects her Irish heritage, and this album is no exception, blending modern electronic sounds with a nod to traditional influences.
"Take Her Up to Monto!" was produced by Eddie Stevens, who has been a long-time collaborator with Murphy. Stevens' production is a key element of the album, providing a cohesive yet experimental sound that complements Murphy's distinctive voice and artistic vision. The album was recorded during the same sessions as "Hairless Toys," which explains the continuity in sound and style between the two records.
The album opens with "Mastermind," a track that sets the tone with its intricate production and Murphy's commanding vocals. The song's structure is complex, featuring multiple layers of instrumentation and a dynamic arrangement that keeps the listener engaged. This complexity is a hallmark of the album, as Murphy and Stevens explore a wide range of sonic textures and moods.
"Pretty Gardens" follows, offering a more subdued and introspective vibe. The song's lyrics reflect themes of personal growth and self-discovery, which are recurrent throughout the album. Murphy's ability to convey emotion through her vocal delivery is particularly evident here, making "Pretty Gardens" one of the standout tracks.
"Thoughts Wasted" is another highlight, with its infectious rhythm and catchy chorus. The song's production is polished and sophisticated, showcasing Stevens' skill in creating a soundscape that is both modern and timeless. Murphy's lyrics, which touch on themes of regret and reflection, add depth to the track.
"Lip Service" is a playful and upbeat song that contrasts with some of the more introspective moments on the album. Its catchy melody and witty lyrics make it an instant favorite, demonstrating Murphy's versatility as an artist. The song's production is crisp and clean, with a focus on rhythm and groove.
"Ten Miles High" is one of the more experimental tracks on the album, featuring a driving beat and atmospheric production. The song's lyrics are abstract and open to interpretation, adding to its enigmatic quality. Murphy's vocal performance is powerful and emotive, making "Ten Miles High" a memorable and impactful track.
"Whatever" is a slower, more contemplative song that showcases Murphy's ability to convey emotion through her voice. The song's sparse arrangement allows her vocals to take center stage, creating an intimate and personal atmosphere. The lyrics, which deal with themes of love and loss, are poignant and heartfelt.
"Romantic Comedy" is a quirky and fun track that adds a touch of humor to the album. Its playful lyrics and upbeat tempo make it a refreshing change of pace, while still fitting within the overall theme and sound of the record. The song's production is polished and professional, with a focus on melody and harmony.
The album closes with "Sitting and Counting," a haunting and introspective song that leaves a lasting impression. The song's minimalist arrangement and Murphy's emotive vocals create a sense of intimacy and vulnerability, making it a fitting end to the album.
Overall, "Take Her Up to Monto!" is a bold and innovative album that showcases Róisín Murphy's unique artistic vision. The combination of intricate production, thoughtful lyrics, and Murphy's distinctive voice makes it a standout release in her discography. Fans of her previous work will find much to appreciate here, while new listeners will be drawn in by the album's creativity and originality.
