Description

"Let's Rock," the ninth studio album by The Black Keys, marks a return to the raw, guitar-driven sound that initially propelled the band to fame. Released on June 28, 2019, this album is a homage to the rock music that inspired the duo, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, in their formative years. After a five-year hiatus following their 2014 album "Turn Blue," "Let's Rock" was eagerly anticipated by fans and critics alike.

The album's title, "Let's Rock," is a nod to the electric chair, as the phrase was reportedly the last words of a convicted murderer in Tennessee. This dark humor is reflected in the album's cover art, which features an illustration of an electric chair. The Black Keys have always had a knack for blending humor with their gritty blues-rock sound, and this album is no exception.

Musically, "Let's Rock" is a back-to-basics effort, eschewing the more experimental and psychedelic elements of "Turn Blue" in favor of straightforward rock and roll. The album opens with "Shine a Little Light," a track that sets the tone with its driving guitar riffs and energetic rhythm. This is followed by "Eagle Birds," which continues the momentum with its infectious groove and catchy chorus.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Lo/Hi," which was released as the lead single. The song received critical acclaim for its powerful vocals and bluesy guitar work, reminiscent of the band's earlier hits. "Lo/Hi" made history by reaching number one on four different Billboard rock charts simultaneously, a testament to its widespread appeal and the band's enduring popularity.

Another highlight is "Go," a track that captures the essence of classic rock with its upbeat tempo and memorable hooks. The accompanying music video, which humorously depicts the band attending a group therapy session, adds an extra layer of entertainment to the song.

"Let's Rock" was well-received by critics, who praised its return to the band's roots and the simplicity of its production. The album was produced by Auerbach and Carney themselves, without the involvement of their longtime producer Danger Mouse, which allowed them to fully embrace their rock influences. Critics noted that the album's straightforward approach was refreshing in an era dominated by genre-blending and electronic influences.

In terms of cultural significance, "Let's Rock" serves as a reminder of the enduring appeal of rock music in its purest form. At a time when many artists are experimenting with new sounds and technologies, The Black Keys' decision to focus on guitar-driven rock is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. The album's success demonstrates that there is still a strong audience for traditional rock music.

While "Let's Rock" did not win any major awards, it solidified The Black Keys' status as one of the leading rock bands of their generation. The album debuted at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart, and its singles received significant airplay on rock radio stations.

Overall, "Let's Rock" is a testament to The Black Keys' ability to evolve while staying true to their roots. The album's blend of catchy melodies, powerful guitar riffs, and Auerbach's distinctive vocals make it a worthy addition to the band's discography. For fans of rock music, "Let's Rock" is a celebration of the genre's timeless appeal and a reminder of why The Black Keys continue to be a force in the music industry.
