Description
The way Johnny Fay’s snare snaps in “It’s a Good Life If You Don’t Weaken” tells you this isn’t a throwaway late-era Hip record. In Violet Light catches the classic five in a reflective, tight-limbed mood, with Gord Downie threading wry details through mid-tempo churn. “The Darkest One” bites harder than you remember, a big chorus lifting off a dry, twitchy groove. Then “Silver Jet” glints with chiming guitars and a quietly triumphant vocal, the kind you catch yourself humming on the tram home.
This LP pressing gives the band room to breathe; the low end sits deeper and cymbals decay cleanly. If you’d rather order online, you can buy The Tragically Hip records online with us. File it next to R.E.M.’s mature period, but the Hip lean more into barroom poetry than college-rock jangle, and it suits them.
Spin it on a cool evening and let the small details rise: Paul Langlois and Rob Baker’s guitars in close conversation, Gord Sinclair’s bass nudging songs forward without fuss. No lineup shake-ups here, just a band playing to their strengths and trusting the songs to do the heavy lifting. It’s a late highlight in a catalogue that rewards front-to-back plays.
Available to order online or in our Melbourne record store, your crate needs this one.
