Description
Cut at The Roxy in Los Angeles in May ’91 with Road Apples barely dry, this 2LP catches The Tragically Hip mid-leap. Little Bones snaps out of the gate, Johnny Fay’s snare like a whip, and Three Pistols chimes with that wiry, twin‑guitar push. The famous New Orleans Is Sinking (Killer Whale Tank) is here, unrushed and funny, edged with a barroom menace only this band could conjure. What you get from this pressing: the low end sits deeper and there’s more space around Rob Baker and Paul Langlois, so the tangle resolves into muscle rather than mush.
Gord Downie rides it all with a voice that’s cracked and laser‑focused, never grandstanding. You can also buy The Tragically Hip records online through our shop if that’s easier. It belongs right next to Neil Young & Crazy Horse on your live shelf, but the rhythms are tighter and the corners sharper. Spread across four sides, the pacing breathes, so the slow burns feel earned and the rockers don’t blur. The room mics catch the Roxy’s sweat and chatter without smearing the mix, and the band’s bar-band discipline keeps the chaos framed.
For anyone who’s lived with Road Apples for years, this is the best snapshot of how those songs actually hit in a small club—loud, loose, and weirdly precise. Order today, available online or for pickup in our Melbourne store.
