Description
The muted trumpet and slow-bloom strings in Stars’ Your Ex-Lover Is Dead feel extra tender here, the kind of detail that tells you this 4LP anniversary set was assembled with care. Various – Arts & Crafts: 2003-2013 maps a decade of Toronto’s indie vanguard, pulling together keystones from Broken Social Scene, Feist, Stars and their extended family. Spin Broken Social Scene’s 7/4 (Shoreline) and the tumbling chorus has real swing; cue Feist’s Mushaboom and those handclaps sit just right.
Pressed across four records, the space opens up and the low end sits deeper, so dense arrangements breathe rather than blur. Sequencing is thoughtful too, moving from widescreen collective workouts to intimate singer-songwriter corners without a jolt. In Melbourne we reach for this when someone asks for a single record that explains how the 2000s Canadian indie bloom actually sounded in rooms.
If you’d rather order online, you can buy Various records online with us. It earns a spot on the shelf next to Arcade Fire and the broader mid-2000s era where orchestral indie, art-pop and guitar collectives shared the same air. You get the big moments, but also the offshoots that make the label feel like a community, not just a roster.
