Description
"Blind Love: A Sound As Ever Anthology - Australian Indie 1990-1999" is a compilation album that serves as a time capsule of the vibrant and diverse Australian indie music scene of the 1990s. Released by Various Artists, this anthology captures the essence of a decade that saw the rise of numerous influential bands and a flourishing underground music culture in Australia.
The 1990s were a transformative period for Australian indie music, characterized by a DIY ethos, a surge in independent record labels, and a burgeoning live music scene. "Blind Love" encapsulates this era by featuring a wide array of tracks from different artists who made significant contributions to the indie landscape during this time.
One of the standout features of this anthology is its eclectic mix of genres and styles. The album includes everything from jangly guitar pop and grunge to electronic and experimental sounds, reflecting the diversity of the Australian indie scene. This variety ensures that there is something for every listener, whether they are long-time fans of the era or newcomers looking to explore the rich musical heritage of 1990s Australia.
The tracklist of "Blind Love" reads like a who's who of Australian indie music from the 1990s. It features iconic bands such as The Go-Betweens, who are represented with their melancholic yet melodic sound that has influenced countless artists. Another notable inclusion is The Church, whose atmospheric and psychedelic rock tracks have earned them a dedicated following both in Australia and internationally.
In addition to these well-known acts, the anthology also shines a light on some of the lesser-known but equally important bands of the time. For instance, Underground Lovers, with their blend of shoegaze and electronic elements, provide a glimpse into the experimental side of the indie scene. Similarly, bands like The Clouds and The Hummingbirds offer catchy, guitar-driven pop tunes that capture the spirit of the era.
The production quality of the album is commendable, with each track carefully remastered to preserve its original charm while ensuring a cohesive listening experience. The liner notes provide valuable context and insights into the significance of each track and artist, making it an informative resource for those interested in the history of Australian indie music.
One of the strengths of "Blind Love" is its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia while also remaining relevant to contemporary listeners. The themes explored in the songs, such as love, loss, and identity, are timeless and resonate just as strongly today as they did in the 1990s. This timeless quality is a testament to the enduring appeal of the music and the talent of the artists featured on the album.
However, the anthology is not without its limitations. Given the vastness of the Australian indie scene in the 1990s, it is impossible for a single compilation to capture every significant artist and track from the era. Some listeners may find that their favorite bands or songs are missing from the collection. Nonetheless, "Blind Love" does an admirable job of providing a representative snapshot of the decade.
In conclusion, "Blind Love: A Sound As Ever Anthology - Australian Indie 1990-1999" is a must-have for anyone interested in the history of Australian music. It offers a comprehensive and engaging overview of a pivotal decade in the country's indie scene, showcasing the talent and diversity of the artists who helped shape it. Whether you are a seasoned aficionado or a curious newcomer, this anthology is sure to provide a rewarding listening experience and a deeper appreciation for the rich musical heritage of 1990s Australia.
