Description

Cold Chisel, the iconic Australian rock band, returned to the music scene in 2003 with their highly anticipated album, "Ringside." This album marked their first studio release in over a decade, and fans were eager to see if the band could recapture the magic that made them one of Australia's most beloved rock acts. With "Ringside," Cold Chisel proved that they still had what it takes to deliver a powerful and memorable album.

From the opening track, "The Things I Love in You," it becomes clear that Cold Chisel has not lost their touch. The song kicks off with a catchy guitar riff and Jimmy Barnes' distinctive vocals, instantly drawing listeners in. The band's signature sound, characterized by a blend of rock, blues, and pub rock influences, is present throughout the album, creating a nostalgic yet fresh listening experience.

One of the standout tracks on "Ringside" is the emotionally charged ballad, "The Last Wave of Summer." This song showcases Barnes' powerful vocals and the band's ability to create a captivating atmosphere. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of longing and reflection, making it a standout moment on the album.

Another highlight is the energetic and anthemic "Water Into Wine." This track perfectly captures the band's ability to create infectious rock songs that are meant to be played loud. The driving rhythm section, combined with Barnes' passionate delivery, makes it a standout track that will surely get fans singing along.

Throughout the album, Cold Chisel explores a range of themes, from love and loss to social commentary. "Yakuza Girls" is a prime example of the band's ability to tackle social issues with their music. The song addresses the exploitation of women in the entertainment industry, with thought-provoking lyrics and a powerful musical arrangement.

One of the album's strengths is the band's tight musicianship. The guitar work of Ian Moss and Don Walker's keyboard skills shine on tracks like "The Perfect Crime" and "The Things I Love in You." The rhythm section, consisting of Phil Small on bass and Steve Prestwich on drums, provides a solid foundation for the band's sound, allowing the songs to soar.

While "Ringside" is a strong album overall, there are a few moments where the energy dips slightly. Tracks like "Once Around the Sun" and "The Party's Over" don't quite reach the same level of excitement as some of the album's standout tracks. However, these moments are few and far between, and the album as a whole remains a solid addition to Cold Chisel's discography.

In terms of production, "Ringside" is polished and well-balanced. The album was produced by Don Walker and Jim Moginie, who successfully capture the raw energy of Cold Chisel's live performances while still maintaining a clean and professional sound.

In conclusion, Cold Chisel's "Ringside" is a triumphant return for the band. It showcases their ability to create powerful and memorable rock songs, while also exploring a range of themes and emotions. Fans of the band will not be disappointed, as the album captures the essence of what makes Cold Chisel such a beloved and influential rock act. "Ringside" is a testament to the band's enduring talent and their ability to create music that resonates with audiences.
