Description

David Bowie's "ChangesTwoBowie" is a fascinating compilation album that was released on November 1, 1981. This album serves as a follow-up to the earlier compilation "ChangesOneBowie" and is a curated collection of some of Bowie's most iconic tracks from the early 1970s through the late 1970s. It’s a delightful journey through Bowie's eclectic sound and artistic evolution, showcasing his ability to blend genres and push boundaries.

The album features a selection of hits that are quintessentially Bowie, including classics like "Space Oddity," "Changes," "Suffragette City," and "Fame." Each track is a testament to Bowie's innovative spirit and his knack for storytelling through music. The compilation is particularly notable for its inclusion of "Golden Years," a track that highlights Bowie's funk influences and his ability to create infectious grooves.

One of the standout aspects of "ChangesTwoBowie" is how it encapsulates the essence of Bowie’s career during a transformative period in music history. The late 60s and 70s were marked by significant cultural shifts, and Bowie was at the forefront, influencing and reflecting the zeitgeist. His work during this time not only garnered commercial success but also critical acclaim, establishing him as a cultural icon. The album itself did well commercially, reaching the top of the charts in several countries, which is a testament to Bowie's enduring popularity.

Critically, "ChangesTwoBowie" has been well-received, with many reviewers praising its selection of tracks. Major publications like Rolling Stone and NME have lauded Bowie for his ability to reinvent himself while maintaining a distinct sound. The album is often recommended for both new listeners and long-time fans as it provides a concise overview of Bowie's most impactful work. It’s a perfect entry point for those who want to explore his music without diving into his extensive discography.

Interestingly, the album was released during a time when Bowie was transitioning into a new phase of his career, moving away from the glam rock persona that had defined his early work. This compilation captures the essence of that transition, showcasing his versatility and willingness to experiment with different styles, from rock to soul to electronic music. It’s a reminder of how Bowie was always ahead of his time, constantly evolving and challenging the norms of the music industry.

In terms of production, "ChangesTwoBowie" features tracks that were produced by some of the most notable names in music, including Tony Visconti and Nile Rodgers. Their contributions helped shape the sound of the tracks included in the compilation, giving them a polished yet raw edge that resonates with listeners. The production quality is top-notch, allowing Bowie's vocals and the instrumentation to shine through beautifully.

A fun fact about the album is that it was released shortly after Bowie had begun to explore new musical territories, including his work on the "Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps)" album, which would come out in 1980. This period was marked by Bowie's collaboration with other artists and his exploration of new sounds, which would later influence the music of the 1980s.

Overall, "ChangesTwoBowie" is more than just a compilation; it’s a celebration of David Bowie's legacy and his impact on music and culture. It’s a must-listen for anyone interested in understanding the evolution of modern music and the artists who have shaped it. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or a newcomer to his work, this album offers a rich tapestry of sound that is both nostalgic and fresh. It’s a reminder of why Bowie remains a towering figure in the music world, and why his songs continue to resonate with audiences today.
