Description

Dire Straits' sixth and final studio album, On Every Street, released on 10 September 1991, marked the end of an era for the band. Following the massive success of their 1985 album Brothers in Arms, which had cemented their place in rock history, On Every Street had the unenviable task of following up a record that had become a cultural phenomenon. While it may not have reached the same stratospheric heights as its predecessor, On Every Street is a compelling and nuanced album that showcases the band's musical maturity and Mark Knopfler's distinctive songwriting.

The album opens with "Calling Elvis", a track that immediately sets the tone with its laid-back groove and Knopfler's signature guitar work. The song's lyrics, filled with Elvis Presley references, are delivered with a wry sense of humour, and the production is lush and detailed. This is followed by "On Every Street", the title track, which is a slow-burning ballad that highlights Knopfler's storytelling ability and the band's knack for creating atmospheric soundscapes.

One of the standout tracks on the album is "Heavy Fuel", a tongue-in-cheek ode to excess that features a driving rhythm and some of Knopfler's most biting lyrics. The song's ironic tone and infectious energy make it a memorable moment on the record. Another highlight is "You and Your Friend", a beautifully understated track that showcases Knopfler's delicate fingerpicking and the band's ability to create a sense of intimacy and warmth.

The album also explores a variety of musical styles, from the country-tinged "The Bug" to the jazzy "Fade to Black." This diversity is a testament to the band's versatility and Knopfler's wide-ranging influences. The production, handled by Knopfler and Neil Dorfsman, is polished and sophisticated, with a focus on creating rich textures and intricate arrangements.

While On Every Street received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics comparing it unfavourably to Brothers in Arms, it has since been re-evaluated by many fans and critics who appreciate its subtle charms and understated brilliance. The album was a commercial success, reaching number one in several countries and spawning a world tour that would ultimately be the band's last.

Listening to On Every Street today, it's clear that the album represents a band at the height of their powers, even as they were nearing the end of their journey. It's a record that rewards repeated listens, revealing new layers and nuances with each spin. For fans of Dire Straits and lovers of thoughtful, well-crafted music, On Every Street is a fitting swan song for one of the most iconic bands of the 20th century.
