Description
"Ice on Fire", released in November 1985, is a fascinating entry in Elton John's extensive discography. Coming off the heels of "Breaking Hearts" (1984), this album marked a period of experimentation and collaboration for Elton, as he worked once again with producer Gus Dudgeon, who had been instrumental in shaping the sound of his earlier classic albums. The result is a record that blends the familiar with the new, showcasing Elton's ability to adapt and evolve while staying true to his musical roots.
One of the standout aspects of "Ice on Fire" is its eclectic mix of styles. The album opens with "This Town", a track that sets a confident tone with its upbeat rhythm and sharp lyrics. However, it's the second track, "Cry to Heaven", that truly captures the listener's attention. This ballad, with its poignant lyrics by Bernie Taupin and Elton's emotive delivery, is a reminder of the duo's unparalleled ability to craft songs that resonate deeply.
The album also features "Nikita", one of Elton's most recognisable hits from the 1980s. This song, with its Cold War-inspired narrative and lush production, became a global success, bolstered by a memorable music video. George Michael's backing vocals add a layer of richness to the track, exemplifying the collaborative spirit of the album. Another notable collaboration is "Wrap Her Up", a duet with George Michael that exudes energy and fun, showcasing a playful side of Elton's artistry.
Musically, "Ice on Fire" is a product of its time, with synthesizers and electronic elements playing a prominent role in the arrangements. While some critics have noted that this production style dates the album, it also serves as a snapshot of the mid-1980s music scene. Tracks like "Satellite" and "Too Young" highlight this aesthetic, blending Elton's piano-driven melodies with contemporary production techniques.
Lyrically, Bernie Taupin's contributions remain a cornerstone of the album. His ability to weave stories and emotions into the songs provides a depth that complements Elton's compositions. "Shoot Down the Moon" and "Candy by the Pound" are examples of this synergy, offering a mix of introspection and whimsy.
"Ice on Fire" received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics praising its ambition and others questioning its cohesiveness. However, it has since been re-evaluated by fans and critics alike, with many appreciating its charm and the risks Elton took during this phase of his career. The album's commercial performance was solid, reaching the top 10 in the UK and producing several hit singles.
In retrospect, "Ice on Fire" stands as a testament to Elton John's versatility and willingness to explore new directions. While it may not have the iconic status of albums like "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" or "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy", it offers a unique glimpse into a transitional period for one of music's most enduring artists. For fans and newcomers alike, "Ice on Fire" is a rewarding listen that showcases the many facets of Elton John's talent.
