Description
The small pedal steel sigh after the first Tiny Dancer chorus still stops us mid-shelf. Elton John’s Madman Across The Water gets the 50th Anniversary treatment across 4LPs, bringing the 1971 Gus Dudgeon and Paul Buckmaster magic into sharper relief. The core album remains a knockout, from the rolling hymnal of Levon to the cinematic surge of Indian Sunset and the brooding title track. This set adds period piano demos and session takes that trace how the songs found their spine without turning the archive into homework.
Spin it and the room opens up. Piano sits in its own pocket, low end sits deeper, and imaging snaps into focus so you can place each harmony. The booklet and expanded art do the history proud without getting fussy. If you file your early-70s singer-songwriter classics next to Carole King, this belongs on that shelf, with Elton leaning grander and more orchestral.

For fans who know every lift in Tiny Dancer, the alternate passes offer just enough contrast to feel new, while keeping the sequence intact for Sunday play-throughs. It’s a generous, good-sounding overview of an era when Elton’s band and strings were learning to breathe together.
