Description

Elton John's 1989 album "Sleeping With The Past" stands as a heartfelt homage to the soul and R&B music that deeply influenced his and Bernie Taupin's early musical sensibilities. Released on August 29, 1989, the album marked a significant moment in Elton's career, both as a commercial success and as a personal artistic statement. It was his 22nd studio album and showcased a mature, reflective side of his artistry, blending his signature piano-driven melodies with a soulful, nostalgic vibe.

The album's lead single, "Healing Hands", is a powerful opener that sets the tone for the record. With its uplifting lyrics and gospel-inspired arrangement, it became a fan favourite and a chart success. However, it was the second single, "Sacrifice", that truly cemented the album's legacy. "Sacrifice" became Elton's first solo number-one single in the UK, a surprising fact considering his extensive catalogue of hits up to that point. The song's poignant lyrics, paired with a hauntingly beautiful melody, struck a chord with listeners worldwide and remains one of his most beloved ballads.

"Sleeping With The Past" is a deeply personal album for Elton and Bernie, as it draws heavily from their shared love of classic soul music. Tracks like "Club at the End of the Street" and "Whispers" evoke the spirit of Motown and Stax Records, with lush arrangements and heartfelt performances. The production, handled by Chris Thomas, is polished yet warm, allowing the emotional core of the songs to shine through. Elton's vocals are particularly strong on this album, conveying a sense of vulnerability and sincerity that resonates throughout.

One of the standout tracks, "I Never Knew Her Name", is a bittersweet tale of fleeting love, while "Amazes Me" showcases Elton's ability to craft deeply moving ballads. The title track, "Sleeping With The Past", is another highlight, with its introspective lyrics and soulful groove. The album as a whole feels cohesive, with each song contributing to the overarching theme of reflection and homage.

Critically, "Sleeping With The Past" was well-received, with many praising its mature sound and heartfelt songwriting. Commercially, it was a major success, particularly in the UK, where it topped the album charts and became one of Elton's best-selling records. The album's success was a testament to Elton and Bernie's enduring partnership and their ability to evolve as artists while staying true to their roots.

In retrospect, "Sleeping With The Past" is a significant entry in Elton John's discography. It captures a moment of artistic renewal and pays tribute to the music that shaped his and Bernie Taupin's creative journey. For fans of Elton John, it is a must-listen, offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of one of music's most iconic duos.
