Description
Elton John's 2013 album, The Diving Board, marks a reflective and intimate chapter in the legendary artist's career. Produced by T Bone Burnett, the album sees Elton returning to a stripped-down, piano-driven sound that harks back to his early days, while also exploring themes of maturity, nostalgia, and artistry.
One of the most striking aspects of The Diving Board is its minimalistic approach. The arrangements are sparse, often centring around Elton's piano, accompanied by subtle percussion and bass. This simplicity allows the songs to breathe and puts the focus squarely on Elton's voice and Bernie Taupin's evocative lyrics. Tracks like "Oceans Away" and "Home Again" exemplify this approach, with their poignant melodies and introspective themes. "Oceans Away" is a touching tribute to the generation that fought in World War II, showcasing Taupin's storytelling prowess and Elton's ability to convey deep emotion through his performance.
The album also features moments of experimentation and playfulness. "The Ballad of Blind Tom" tells the story of a 19th-century pianist, blending historical narrative with a bluesy, theatrical arrangement. "Mexican Vacation (Kids in the Candlelight)" injects a lively, almost gospel-like energy into the record, providing a contrast to the more subdued tracks. These songs highlight Elton's versatility and his willingness to explore different musical landscapes, even at this stage in his career.
Critics generally praised The Diving Board for its artistic integrity and focus. Many noted that it felt like a return to form for Elton, showcasing his strengths as a songwriter and performer. The album's production, handled by T Bone Burnett, received particular acclaim for its organic and authentic sound. Burnett's influence is evident in the album's earthy tones and emphasis on live instrumentation, which complement Elton's piano-driven compositions beautifully.
While The Diving Board may not have produced chart-topping singles, it stands as a cohesive and deeply personal work. It's an album that rewards attentive listening, revealing new layers with each play. For fans of Elton John's earlier work, or for those who appreciate music with a sense of history and craftsmanship, The Diving Board is a compelling addition to his extensive discography. It serves as a reminder of Elton John's enduring talent and his ability to connect with listeners on a profound level, even after decades in the industry.
