Description
Elton John's 1981 album, The Fox, is an intriguing entry in his extensive discography. Released during a transitional period in his career, the album showcases a mix of styles and influences, reflecting both his past successes and his willingness to experiment with new sounds. While it may not be as universally celebrated as some of his earlier works, The Fox holds its own as a collection of well-crafted songs that highlight Elton's enduring talent as a songwriter and performer.
One of the most notable aspects of The Fox is its production. The album was recorded across several sessions in different locations, including London, Nice, and Los Angeles, and features contributions from a variety of producers, including Chris Thomas, who had worked with Elton on previous albums. This collaborative approach gives the album a diverse sonic palette, ranging from lush, orchestrated ballads to more upbeat, pop-oriented tracks. The production is polished and sophisticated, a hallmark of Elton's work during this era.
The album opens with "Breaking Down Barriers", a dynamic and energetic track that sets the tone for what is to come. The song's driving rhythm and uplifting melody are classic Elton, and the lyrics, penned by Gary Osborne, convey a sense of determination and resilience. Osborne, who had collaborated with Elton on his previous album, 21 at 33, contributes lyrics to several tracks on The Fox, sharing duties with Bernie Taupin, Elton's longtime lyricist. This dual partnership results in a varied lyrical landscape, with themes ranging from introspection to storytelling.
One of the standout tracks on the album is "Nobody Wins", a sleek, synth-driven song that showcases Elton's ability to adapt to the evolving musical trends of the early 1980s. The song, originally written in French by Jean-Paul Dreau and adapted into English by Osborne, has a cool, detached vibe that contrasts with some of the more emotive moments on the album. Another highlight is "Elton's Song", a tender and poignant ballad with lyrics by Tom Robinson. The song's understated arrangement and heartfelt delivery make it one of the most memorable tracks on The Fox.
The album also features "Just Like Belgium", a lively and playful tune with lyrics by Taupin that reflect his knack for vivid imagery and storytelling. The song's jaunty rhythm and catchy chorus make it a fun and engaging listen. "Heels of the Wind" is another Taupin collaboration, and its upbeat tempo and infectious energy are reminiscent of Elton's earlier hits. The title track, "The Fox", is a more introspective and atmospheric piece, with a haunting melody and evocative lyrics that leave a lasting impression.
While The Fox may not have achieved the commercial success of some of Elton's other albums, it received positive reviews from critics, who praised its songwriting and production. The album's eclectic mix of styles and moods demonstrates Elton's versatility as an artist and his commitment to exploring new musical territory. For fans of his work, The Fox offers a fascinating glimpse into a period of transition and experimentation, and its songs continue to resonate with listeners today.
In retrospect, The Fox stands as a testament to Elton John's enduring creativity and artistry. It may not be as immediately recognisable as some of his other albums, but it is a rewarding listen for those willing to delve into its rich and varied soundscapes. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to Elton's music, The Fox is well worth exploring, as it captures a unique moment in the career of one of music's most iconic figures.
