Description
Elton John's "The Thom Bell Sessions '77" is a fascinating chapter in the artist's storied career. Recorded in 1977 but not fully released until 1979, this collection of songs represents a unique collaboration between Elton John and legendary producer Thom Bell, known for his work in the Philadelphia soul genre. The sessions marked a departure from Elton's usual style, as he ventured into the lush, orchestrated soundscapes that Bell was renowned for.
The project was initially intended to be a full album, but creative differences and other complications led to only a handful of tracks being completed. The original release in 1979 featured just three songs: "Mama Can't Buy You Love", "Three Way Love Affair", and "Are You Ready for Love." Despite the limited release, the songs showcased a different side of Elton's artistry, blending his distinctive voice and songwriting with Bell's soulful arrangements and production.
"Mama Can't Buy You Love" became the standout track from the sessions, achieving commercial success and reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. The song's infectious groove and heartfelt lyrics resonated with audiences, and it remains a highlight in Elton's discography. The other tracks, while not as commercially successful, are equally compelling, offering a glimpse into what could have been a full-fledged exploration of the Philadelphia soul sound by Elton John.
The Thom Bell Sessions also featured the talents of the Spinners, a vocal group closely associated with Bell's work. Their contributions added depth and authenticity to the recordings, further enhancing the soulful vibe of the project. The collaboration between Elton John and Thom Bell was a meeting of two musical worlds, and while it may not have resulted in a complete album, the songs that emerged from the sessions are a testament to the creative possibilities of such a partnership.
In 1989, a more comprehensive version of the sessions was released, including additional tracks like "Nice and Slow" and an extended version of "Are You Ready for Love." This release provided fans with a fuller picture of the collaboration and allowed the music to be appreciated in a broader context. The extended version of "Are You Ready for Love" in particular has gained recognition over the years, even reaching the top of the UK Singles Chart in 2003 when it was re-released.
"The Thom Bell Sessions '77" stands as a unique and intriguing entry in Elton John's catalogue. It showcases his willingness to experiment and collaborate with artists outside his usual sphere, resulting in music that is both distinctive and timeless. While it may not have achieved the same level of acclaim as some of his other works, it remains a beloved and respected part of his legacy, offering a soulful detour in a career defined by its diversity and innovation.
