Description
Elton John's 1983 album Too Low for Zero is often regarded as a return to form for the legendary artist, and for good reason. After a few years of experimenting with different sounds and collaborators, this album marked a reunion with lyricist Bernie Taupin, with whom Elton had created some of his most iconic work. The result is a collection of songs that feel both fresh and familiar, showcasing Elton's knack for crafting memorable melodies and Taupin's evocative storytelling.
One of the standout aspects of Too Low for Zero is its consistency. The album features some of Elton's most enduring hits, including "I'm Still Standing" and "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues." The former is an upbeat anthem of resilience, driven by a punchy rhythm and Elton's energetic piano playing. It's a song that has become synonymous with Elton's ability to persevere and thrive in the face of challenges. The latter, on the other hand, is a heartfelt ballad that highlights Elton's gift for emotional expression. With its soulful melody and poignant lyrics, "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" remains a fan favourite and a staple of his live performances.
Another highlight is the title track, "Too Low for Zero", which opens the album with a moody, synth-driven sound that sets the tone for the rest of the record. The production on this album is particularly noteworthy, as it blends the classic Elton John sound with the contemporary influences of the early 1980s. The use of synthesizers and electronic elements adds a modern edge to the songs, while still allowing Elton's piano and vocals to take centre stage.
The album also features deeper cuts that are worth exploring. "Kiss the Bride" is a playful, rock-infused track with a catchy chorus, while "Cold as Christmas (In the Middle of the Year)" is a poignant ballad that tells a bittersweet story of love and loss. These songs, along with others like "Crystal" and "Religion", showcase the diversity of styles and themes that Elton and Bernie were able to explore on this record.
Too Low for Zero was both a commercial and critical success, reaching the top 10 in several countries and earning praise for its strong songwriting and production. It marked a turning point in Elton's career, reaffirming his status as one of the most talented and versatile artists of his generation. The album's success also helped to solidify his partnership with Bernie Taupin, which would continue to produce many more memorable songs in the years to come.
Listening to Too Low for Zero today, it's clear why it has stood the test of time. The songs are well-crafted and emotionally resonant, and the production still feels fresh and engaging. It's an album that captures Elton John at a pivotal moment in his career, balancing the experimentation of his earlier work with a renewed focus on melody and storytelling. For fans of Elton John, or anyone who appreciates great pop music, Too Low for Zero is a must-listen.
