Description
Elvis Presley's "For LP Fans Only" is one of those albums that, despite not featuring any new recordings at the time of its release in February 1959, still holds a special place in the rock 'n' roll legend's discography. This album is particularly notable because it was released while Elvis was serving in the U.S. Army, and it marks the first time a Presley album was issued without his direct involvement in the production process. This context adds a layer of historical significance, as it reflects the star's immense popularity that his label, RCA Victor, felt confident in releasing a compilation to keep the Elvis mania alive even during his absence.
"For LP Fans Only" is a compilation that brings together a mix of previously released singles and deep cuts that had not appeared on his main album releases. This makes the album a fascinating artifact for both dedicated fans and newcomers exploring the depths of Elvis's early work. The tracks are a mix of rockabilly, ballads, and blues numbers that showcase Elvis's versatile vocal ability and his unique charisma that could make any song distinctly his own.
One of the standout tracks is "Mystery Train," a song that encapsulates the raw, energetic sound that made Elvis a household name. The track, originally recorded in 1955, is a prime example of Elvis's ability to blend country and blues into the new and exciting sound of rock 'n' roll. Another highlight is "That's All Right," the song that arguably started it all for Elvis. Recorded in 1954, it's his first commercial single and a pivotal moment in the history of music. The inclusion of these tracks on the album not only serves to showcase Elvis's musical roots but also to cement his status as a pioneer of rock 'n' roll.
The album also includes lesser-known gems like "Poor Boy" and "I Was the One," which might not have received as much radio play as some of his hits but are equally important in showcasing the breadth of Elvis's talent. "Poor Boy" has a distinctly folksy vibe that complements the more rock-driven numbers, while "I Was the One" is a tender ballad that highlights Elvis's softer vocal stylings.
Critically, "For LP Fans Only" has been appreciated for its historical value and the quality of its selections. While it might not have the cohesion of some of Elvis's purpose-recorded albums, it offers a snapshot of his formative years, capturing the moments that would define his career and change the landscape of American music.
Interestingly, the album's release without Elvis's direct involvement also speaks to the changing nature of music consumption at the time. It was somewhat unusual for an artist to have an album released while not actively participating in its promotion or production, a testament to Elvis's unprecedented fame and the demand for his music.
"For LP Fans Only" did not win any awards, nor was it crafted with the intention of being a blockbuster release. However, its significance lies in its role in maintaining Elvis's presence in the music scene during his military service and providing fans with a collection that highlighted different facets of his musical journey.
In conclusion, "For LP Fans Only" is more than just a stopgap compilation—it's a crucial piece of the Elvis Presley puzzle. For those who admire Elvis, this album offers a deeper understanding of his musical origins and the early sounds that shaped his legendary career. For newcomers, it serves as a window into the era of Elvis's rise, providing context and connection to the roots of rock 'n' roll. It's a must-listen for anyone interested in the history of popular music and the icon that is Elvis Presley.
