Description

Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk," released in 1979, stands as a bold and experimental departure from the band's previous work, particularly the immensely successful "Rumours." While "Rumours" was a polished, cohesive collection of pop-rock songs that captured the zeitgeist of the late 1970s, "Tusk" is a sprawling double album that showcases the band's willingness to take risks and explore new musical territories.

The album was recorded at a time when Fleetwood Mac was at the height of their fame, and the pressure to follow up "Rumours" with another commercial success was immense. However, Lindsey Buckingham, one of the band's primary songwriters and producers, was determined to push the boundaries of what Fleetwood Mac could be. Influenced by punk and new wave music, Buckingham steered the band towards a more experimental sound, incorporating unconventional recording techniques and a diverse range of musical styles.

"Tusk" features 20 tracks, each contributing to the album's eclectic and sometimes disjointed feel. The title track, "Tusk," is perhaps the most famous song from the album, notable for its use of the University of Southern California's marching band, which gives the song a unique and grandiose sound. The track's tribal rhythms and chant-like vocals were unlike anything Fleetwood Mac had done before, and it remains a standout in their discography.

Other notable tracks include "Sara," a hauntingly beautiful ballad written by Stevie Nicks, which showcases her ethereal voice and poetic lyrics. "Sara" became one of the album's biggest hits, reaching the top 10 in the United States. Christine McVie's contributions, such as "Think About Me" and "Brown Eyes," provide a more traditional pop-rock sensibility, balancing Buckingham's experimental tendencies with her melodic songwriting.

Critically, "Tusk" received mixed reviews upon its release. Some critics praised the album's ambition and creativity, while others were less enthusiastic about its lack of cohesion and commercial appeal compared to "Rumours." Over time, however, "Tusk" has been re-evaluated and is now considered a cult classic, admired for its daring approach and artistic integrity. It has influenced a wide range of artists and is often cited as a precursor to the indie and alternative rock movements of the 1980s and 1990s.

Commercially, "Tusk" did not achieve the same level of success as "Rumours," but it still performed well, reaching number four on the US Billboard 200 and selling over four million copies worldwide. The album's high production costs, reportedly over one million dollars, made it one of the most expensive albums ever recorded at the time, which added to the pressure for it to succeed.

Despite its initial mixed reception, "Tusk" has left a lasting legacy. It has been included in numerous "best of" lists and continues to be a source of inspiration for musicians and fans alike. The album's willingness to defy expectations and embrace experimentation is a testament to Fleetwood Mac's artistic vision and resilience.

In conclusion, "Tusk" is a fascinating and complex album that captures Fleetwood Mac at a pivotal moment in their career. It is an album that challenges the listener, offering a rich tapestry of sounds and emotions that reveal new layers with each listen. While it may not have the immediate appeal of "Rumours," "Tusk" is a rewarding and influential work that stands as a testament to the band's creativity and willingness to take risks.
