Description

George Harrison's "Extra Texture (Read All About It)," released in 1975, marks an intriguing chapter in the former Beatle's solo career. This album, his sixth studio effort, came at a time when Harrison was navigating the complexities of life post-Beatles, both personally and professionally. It reflects a period of introspection and transition, capturing a blend of melancholy and hope.

"Extra Texture" is often noted for its departure from the overt spiritual themes that characterized much of Harrison's earlier solo work. Instead, it leans more towards soul and R&B influences, showcasing Harrison's versatility as a musician. The album opens with "You," a track that stands out for its upbeat tempo and catchy melody. Originally written during the sessions for his previous album, "Dark Horse," "You" became a modest hit, reaching number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its infectious energy and vibrant arrangement make it one of the more memorable tracks on the album.

Another notable song is "This Guitar (Can't Keep from Crying)," which serves as a sequel to the Beatles' classic "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." This track reflects Harrison's feelings of vulnerability and resilience, using his guitar as a metaphor for his emotional state. The song's introspective lyrics and haunting melody resonate with listeners, offering a glimpse into Harrison's personal struggles during this period.

The album's production is characterized by a polished sound, with lush arrangements and a prominent use of keyboards. Harrison collaborated with a range of talented musicians, including Gary Wright on keyboards and David Foster, who contributed to the album's sophisticated sound. The production quality, while smooth, sometimes overshadows the raw emotion that Harrison is known for, leading to mixed reviews from critics.

Critically, "Extra Texture" received a lukewarm reception upon its release. Some reviewers appreciated Harrison's exploration of new musical styles, while others felt the album lacked the depth and innovation of his earlier work. Despite the mixed reviews, the album holds a certain charm, with its introspective lyrics and soulful melodies offering a different perspective on Harrison's artistry.

In terms of cultural significance, "Extra Texture" represents a period of transition for Harrison. It was his last album released under the Apple Records label, marking the end of an era. The album's themes of introspection and personal growth reflect Harrison's journey as an artist and individual, navigating the challenges of fame and personal change.

While "Extra Texture" did not achieve the commercial success of some of Harrison's other solo projects, it remains an important part of his discography. It captures a moment in time when Harrison was experimenting with new sounds and ideas, offering fans a deeper understanding of his musical evolution.

Overall, "Extra Texture (Read All About It)" is a testament to George Harrison's enduring talent and willingness to explore new musical territories. It may not be his most celebrated work, but it offers a unique glimpse into the mind of an artist in transition, grappling with the complexities of life and music. For fans of Harrison and those interested in the post-Beatles era, this album provides an intriguing listen, filled with moments of introspection and soulful expression.
