Description
Gerry Rafferty's "City to City," released in 1978, is a landmark album that marked the Scottish singer-songwriter's transition from his earlier work with Stealers Wheel to a successful solo career. The album is best known for its hit single "Baker Street," which features one of the most iconic saxophone solos in rock history, played by Raphael Ravenscroft. This track alone propelled the album to commercial success, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States and number six on the UK Albums Chart.
"City to City" is a rich tapestry of folk rock, soft rock, and pop, showcasing Rafferty's knack for crafting memorable melodies and introspective lyrics. The album opens with "The Ark," a song that sets the tone with its lush arrangements and Rafferty's warm, inviting vocals. "Baker Street," the second track, became a cultural phenomenon, with its haunting saxophone riff and lyrics that capture the sense of urban alienation and longing for escape.
Another standout track is "Right Down the Line," which was also released as a single and became a top 20 hit in the United States. This song is a testament to Rafferty's ability to blend heartfelt lyrics with catchy, radio-friendly tunes. "Right Down the Line" is often praised for its smooth production and Rafferty's sincere vocal delivery.
The album's title track, "City to City," is a reflective piece that highlights Rafferty's journey from his hometown to the bustling life of a city, capturing the excitement and challenges of such a transition. "Home and Dry" and "Mattie's Rag" are other notable tracks that showcase Rafferty's storytelling prowess and his ability to infuse his music with personal experiences and emotions.
Critically, "City to City" was well-received, with many reviewers praising Rafferty's songwriting and the album's polished production. The album's success was a significant achievement for Rafferty, establishing him as a prominent figure in the music industry during the late 1970s. It also earned him a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male, further cementing his status as a talented solo artist.

"Baker Street" has been covered by numerous artists and continues to receive airplay on classic rock and adult contemporary radio stations.
