Description
INXS's 1997 album Elegantly Wasted marked a significant moment in the band's career. Released on April 15, 1997, it was their tenth studio album and the last to feature Michael Hutchence as the lead vocalist before his untimely passing later that year. The album showcases the band's ability to blend rock, pop, and dance elements into a cohesive and engaging sound, a hallmark of their style that had brought them international acclaim in the 1980s and early 1990s.
The title track, "Elegantly Wasted", serves as a strong opener and sets the tone for the album. With its infectious groove and Hutchence's charismatic delivery, the song captures the essence of INXS's appeal. The lyrics, reportedly inspired by Hutchence's personal experiences, add a layer of introspection to the track, making it both catchy and thought-provoking. The song received significant airplay and remains a fan favourite.
Throughout the album, the band experiments with different sounds and textures while staying true to their roots. Tracks like "Show Me (Cherry Baby)" and "Don't Lose Your Head" highlight their knack for crafting memorable hooks and dynamic arrangements. The production, handled by Bruce Fairbairn, is polished and complements the band's performance, allowing each instrument to shine while maintaining a cohesive sound.
One of the standout aspects of Elegantly Wasted is Hutchence's vocal performance. His voice, both powerful and emotive, carries the songs and imbues them with a sense of authenticity. Whether he's delivering a sultry whisper or a soaring chorus, Hutchence's presence is undeniable and serves as a reminder of his immense talent.
While the album received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics comparing it unfavourably to the band's earlier work, it has since been re-evaluated by fans and music historians. Many now see it as a fitting swan song for Hutchence, showcasing his artistry and the band's ability to adapt to the changing musical landscape of the late 1990s.
Elegantly Wasted may not have reached the commercial heights of albums like Kick or X, but it remains an important part of INXS's discography. It captures a band at a crossroads, navigating personal and professional challenges while continuing to create compelling music. For fans of INXS and those interested in exploring their later work, this album offers a glimpse into the enduring legacy of one of Australia's most iconic bands.
